AN EMB145 DURING ENG START ON #2 ENG AFTER 2 ATTEMPTS WITH NO NORMAL START ENG WAS FOUND WITH TURBINE DAMAGE.

Narrative

ON THE GND AT THE GATE; WITH PAX ON BOARD; THE CREW ATTEMPTED TO ACCOMPLISH THE ENG START PROC. DURING THE STARTING PROCESS OF THE #2 ENG; THE ITT WAS RAPIDLY APCHING THE START LIMIT. THE CAPT ROTATED THE 'START/STOP SELECTOR' TO STOP AND CALLED FOR THE ABORT START PROC. THE ENG TEMP CONTINUED TO RISE PAST THE START LIMIT. ITT NUMBERS WERE REPLACED BY AMBER DASHES. UPON RESETTING FADEC; ITT INDICATED 610 (NORMAL) AND DECREASING. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A FIRE. NO SMOKE WAS OBSERVED BY THE CREW IN THE CABIN/COCKPIT. HOWEVER; A HOT METAL ODOR WAS NOTICED. PAX WERE DEPLANED AND GND CTL WAS CONTACTED TO SEND THE FIRE TRUCKS AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. AFTER THEIR ARR; NO ASSISTANCE WAS NEEDED. AN EMER WAS NOT DECLARED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE FIRST START ATTEMPT ON #2 ENG WAS HUNG WITHIN NORMAL START TEMP. THE RPTR SAID THE SECOND ATTEMPT WAS A HOT START WITH HIGH TEMPS. THE RPTR SAID THE AIRPLANE WAS EVACED PRECAUTIONARY BECAUSE OF A HOT SMELL. THE RPTR SAID INSPECTION OF THE ENG REVEALED TURBINE BLADES AND ENG PIECES IN THE TAILPIPE AND ON THE GND. THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS ALLISON AE3007 ENG.
