Synopsis

CABIN ATTENDANT RPT; MD80; ABQ-ORD. ON TKOF; SMOKE IN CABIN. RETURN TO ABQ. NO EVAC NECESSARY.

Narrative

RIGHT AFTER TKOF; I NOTICED THE CABIN LOOKED HAZY. I CALLED THE FORWARD JUMP SEAT TO SEE IF THEY NOTICED; THEY SAID IT LOOKED SMOKY. CALL LIGHTS FROM PAX STARTED TO GO OFF. I CALLED THE COCKPIT; USING EMER CHIMES. I TOLD THEM THERE WAS SMOKE IN THE CABIN AND THAT WE SHOULD LAND. THEY SAID THEY WERE AWARE OF THE SIT. I MADE A PA TO TELL THE PAX THAT THE CAPT WAS AWARE OF THE SIT. I GRABBED AN EXTINGUISHER AND WENT UP THE AISLE LOOKING AT THE FLOOR TO SEE IF I SAW FIRE. THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF WHITE SMOKE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE CABIN AND IT SMELLED. 2 MALE PAX (WHO WERE CREW MEMBERS FOR ANOTHER AIRLINE) STOPPED ME AND TOLD ME THEY THOUGHT IT WAS OIL BURNING OFF IN THE AIR PACKS; BECAUSE IT WAS COMING IN THROUGH THE SIDE WALL VENTS. I WENT TO THE COCKPIT AND TOLD THEM WHAT THE 2 MEN SAID. THE CAPT SAID WE WERE LNDG. I MADE A PA AND TOLD THE PAX WE WERE LNDG RIGHT AWAY. WE CALMED THE PAX AND TOLD THEM EVERYTHING WOULD BE ALL RIGHT AND THAT WE WERE LNDG. THE SMOKE STARTED TO DISSIPATE. THE CAPT MADE A PA TELLING THE PAX WE WERE LNDG AND BELIEVED THAT AN EVAC WASN'T NECESSARY; BUT TO LISTEN TO THE FLT ATTENDANTS' INSTRUCTIONS. WE LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND AN EVAC WASN'T NECESSARY. THE PAX REMAINED CALM; AND WE TAXIED TO THE GATE AND DEPLANED OUT THE FORWARD DOOR.
