CREW OF AN INST TRAINING FLT CONCERNED ABOUT THE LACK OF RESTR AREA DEPICTION ON THE APCH CHARTS FOR SOP; NC; RWY 5 ILS. THE VOR GPS APCH TO THE SAME ARPT HAS THEM.

Narrative

I WAS FLYING 'UNDER THE HOOD' WITH A CFII AS INSTRUCTOR AND SAFETY PLT. WE WERE ON AN OUT AND BACK INST TRAINING FLT FROM GSO TO SOP TO GSO. AT THE APPROPRIATE TIME I CONTACTED FAY APCH CTL FOR FLT FOLLOWING AND ADVISED OUR INTENT TO FLY THE ILS RWY 5 APCH TO MOORE COUNTY (SOP). FAY APCH OFFERED VECTORS; BUT MY CFI ADVISED ME HE WANTED ME TO FLY THE FULL PROC. AT THIS POINT WE WERE TRANSITIONING FROM THE SANDHILLS (SDZ) VORTAC TO FALOW. THE CFI ADVISED ME THAT AT 90 KTS THE 6.1 NM TRANSITION SHOULD TAKE ABOUT 4 MINS. THIS WOULD HELP US MAINTAIN POSITIONAL AWARENESS IN THE EVENT WE DID NOT FLY DIRECTLY OVER THE FALOW OM. AT THE 4 MIN TIME MARK; I HAD NOT RECEIVED INDICATION OF LOC. MY CFI ADVISED ME TO FLY 1 MORE MIN SINCE WE WERE NOT CERTAIN HOW THE WIND MIGHT HAVE AFFECTED OUR HDG. AT THIS POINT THE CFI NOTICED; FROM GND REFS; THAT WE HAD PASSED THE RWY 5 CTRLINE FOR SOP. BEING FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA; THE CFI WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE RESTR AIRSPACE (R5311) AHEAD OF US. HE CALLED FAY APCH CTL FOR POS CONFIRMATION. WE WERE ADVISED WE WERE 4 NM SE OF FALOW. THE CFI ASKED FOR VECTOR TO THE FINAL AND WE WERE IMMEDIATELY TURNED AWAY FROM THE RESTR AREA. THE CTLR SEEMED A BIT SURPRISED THAT WE HAD CONTACTED HIM AND REQUESTED VECTORS AND POS VERIFICATION. WE THANKED HIM FOR HIS HELP AND PROCEEDED TO MAKE A SUCCESSFUL ILS RWY 5 APCH. UPON REVIEW OF THE SIT; I DO NOT BELIEVE WE ACTUALLY PENETRATED THE RESTR AREA (R5311). BUT I FOUND IT INTERESTING THAT THE ALERT AREA (A531) IS DEPICTED ON THE VOR OR GPS-A PLATE FOR SOP WHILE THE RESTR AREA (R5311) IS NOT DEPICTED ON ANY SOP APCH PLATES. ATC OFFERED NO ADVISORY OR WARNING OF POSSIBLE INTRUSION INTO RESTR AREA. IF THIS AREA HAD BEEN DEPICTED ON THE APCH PLATE; I WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE CONCERNED (AWARE) OF MY SIT. IF THE CFI HAD NOT BEEN FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA I MIGHT HAVE FLOWN INTO R5311. IT IS MY OPINION THAT RESTR AREAS NEAR SOP APCHS SHOULD BE DEPICTED. WHEN A PLT IS SATURATED WITH WORKLOAD AND REFING THE APCH PLATES; THIS DEPICTION WOULD IMPROVE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS.
