BE99 CREW HIT AN MD80 DEPARTING THE GATE AT EWR.

Narrative

ON JUN/XA/00 AT XA00; WE BOARDED UP OUR PAX AND BEGAN TO TAXI TO THE RWY FROM OUR GATE. AS WE LEFT OUR GATE; IN ORDER TO TAXI TO THE RWY; WE HAD TO GO IN BTWN AN ACR Y (AN MD80) WHICH WAS AT THE GATE PARKED; AND ONE OF OUR PLANES (A BEECHCRAFT 1900D). AS WE WERE MAKING OUR WAY IN BTWN THE 2 AIRPLANES; WE HAD A WING WALKER TO THE L OF US AND TO THE R OF US. THE WINGTIP OF OUR AIRPLANE STARTED TO GET VERY CLOSE TO THE MD80 EVEN THOUGH THE WING WALKER TOLD US TO CONTINUE. AT THIS TIME I TOLD THE CAPT THAT IT WAS TOO CLOSE AND THAT HE SHOULD STOP. AFTER ME TELLING THE CAPT TO STOP 6 TIMES; HE FINALLY SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND OUR ACFT LUNGED FORWARD HITTING THE MD80; EVEN THOUGH THE WING WALKER DIDN'T HELP US. HE NEVER CLRED OUR WING. OUR WINGTIP BECAME LODGED UNDERNEATH THE MD80'S WING. AFTER DEPLANING OUR 17 PAX; WE TOOK A LOOK AT OUR AIRPLANE TO NOTICE THAT THERE WAS NOT MUCH DAMAGE. THE MD80 WASN'T DAMAGED THAT MUCH EITHER. WE BROKE THE STROBE LIGHT THAT WAS ALL. THIS EVENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE WING WALKER DID HIS JOB; BUT ALSO IF THE CAPT LISTENED TO ME FROM THE BEGINNING. PARKING AIRPLANES CLOSE IS A NORMAL OCCURRENCE IN NEWARK. IT IS ALWAYS TIGHT ON SPACE. WE ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE WING WALKERS. I BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD CHANGE THEIR OP DOWN THERE; SO THIS WON'T NEED TO HAPPEN AGAIN. EVERY TIME OUR AIRPLANES TAXI OUT OF THE TIGHT SPACE THEY ALWAYS TAKE THE CHANCE OF HITTING ANOTHER AIRPLANE. THIS SHOULDN'T BE.
