DEALING WITH NAV EQUIP PROBS LEADS TO COURSE DEVS AND CRM PROBS.

Narrative

AFTER CLBOUT FROM BTV WE EXPERIENCED A GYROSCOPE SYS FAILURE. I WOULD ESTIMATE THIS OCCURRED AROUND GLENS FALLS; NY. NOT A BIG DEAL; WE RAN THE CHKLIST AND REVERTED TO #2 SYS. IMMEDIATELY; I NOTICED THE FMS MADE NO SENSE. WHERE WE WERE ON COURSE PRIOR TO THE FAILURE WE'RE NOW (ACCORDING TO THE FMS) 3 MI OFF COURSE. ALSO; WE HAD JUST GONE TO BTV FROM DCA AND THE WIND WAS SW AT APPROX 40 KTS. NOW THE FMS INDICATED NE WINDS TO SPDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 150 KTS. I POINTED THIS OUT TO THE CAPT AND HE REFUSED TO BELIEVE IT. HE TRIED COUPLING UP THE FMS. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE W OF COURSE (ACCORDING TO THE FMS) WITH A 150 KT WIND AND THE ACFT TURNED AWAY FROM COURSE; I WAS IN RADAR NAV MODE AND CONFIRMED THE FMS WAS WRONG. STILL THE CAPT REFUSED TO BELIEVE ME. HE SAID 'LET'S SEE WHAT IT'LL DO.' THE ACFT TURNED 40 DEGS AWAY FROM COURSE AND I TOLD HIM TO GIVE UP. I HAD MADE MANY REQUESTS FOR HIM TO STOP BUT HE IGNORED ME. ALSO; ONLY AFTER MY PERSISTENT BADGERING WOULD HE LET ME TELL ATC WE WERE NAVIGATIONALLY IMPAIRED. I COULD JUST NOT CONVINCE HIM THAT WHAT HE SAW IN THE FMS WAS NOT RIGHT. I HAVE HAD THIS PROB WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAPT A LOT. (I DON'T CARE THAT I AM YOUNG AND VOCAL; CAPT. MY ARGUMENTS WERE VALID AND EVEN IF THEY AREN'T; PROVE ME WRONG; DON'T JUST TELL ME I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S UP.) I THINK MY AGE IS A REAL ISSUE WITH THIS GUY. REGARDLESS THANKS TO HIS ATTITUDE; WE PROBABLY WERE 3 MI EITHER SIDE OF COURSE FOR 70 MI OR SO; DESPITE MY PERSISTENT OBJECTIONS.
