FLC OF A CPR ASTRA JET FAILED TO FOLLOW THEIR ARR TRACK DUE TO MISOPERATING THE LONG RANGE NAV UNIT WITH THE PROGRAMMED ROUTING.
Narrative
ON JUN/XA/00; WHILE FLYING AN ASTRA JET FROM ROC TO EWR; THE OTHER PLT AND I RECEIVED ATC CLRNC FROM ROC CLRNC DELIVERY 'CLRED TO EWR VIA DIRECT HNK VORTAC; THEN DIRECT.' PRIOR TO REACHING HNK; ZOB ADVISED US TO PROCEED TO EWR VIA THE SHAFF 4 ARR. THIS WAS PROGRAMMED INTO THE #2 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT. EACH INTXN WAS VERIFIED AGAINST THE SHAFF 4 ARR. WHEN ALL INFO WAS DEEMED ACCURATE; IT WAS XFERRED TO THE #1 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT. LATER; BUT STILL PRIOR TO REACHING HNK; WE LISTENED TO EWR ATIS; WHICH INDICATED THAT WE SHOULD EXPECT THE ILS TO RWY 22L. WE PROGRAMMED THE ILS INTO THE #2 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT AND VERIFIED ALL INTXNS; THEN XFERRED THAT INFO TO THE #1 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT. AFTER PASSING HNK; WHICH IS WHERE THE SHAFF 4 ARR BEGINS; ATC ADVISED US THAT WE WERE NOT FOLLOWING THE SHAFF 4 ARR. WE IMMEDIATELY DISCOVERED THAT THE SHAFF 4 ARR WAS DELETED FROM THE #1 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT. THIS MUST HAVE OCCURRED WHEN WE XFERRED THE ILS FROM #2 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT TO #1 LONG RANGE NAV UNIT. WE LEARNED FROM THIS SIT THAT WE MUST VERIFY ALL DATA EVERY TIME WE MAKE A CHANGE TO THE DATA IN THE LONG RANGE NAV UNIT.
