DISORIENTATION AND CONFUSION OCCUR WHEN PLT USES NON IFR LORAN CONNECTED TO HIS HORIZ SIT INDICATOR ON AN IFR DEP FROM TEB; NJ.

Narrative

I DEPARTED IFR OUT OF TEB FOR BDL. MY CLRNC WAS DALTON 19 RADAR VECTORS BREZY V39 CMK DIRECT. AFTER TKOF I WAS VECTORED NW OF TEB AND EVENTUALLY GIVEN 010 DEG HDG TO JOIN THE KINGSTON 217 DEG RADIAL TO BREZY ON COURSE. I HAD BREZY DIALED INTO THE LORAN EVEN THOUGH I COULDN'T USE IT FOR IFR. I REMEMBER THAT BREZY WAS ABOUT 030 DEGS AND I THINK 15 NM. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE AREA IT TOOK A FEW MOMENTS TO FIND THE KINGSTON VOR AND SET UP THE RADIAL. (LITTLE DID I KNOW IT WAS ON THE DEP.) AFTER I HAD IT SET UP I THOUGHT I HAD FLOWN THROUGH THE RADIAL AND TURNED R TO CORRECT. THE CTLR REPEATED TO FLY '010 DEGS AND JOIN THE KINGSTON 217 DEG RADIAL;' SO I FIGURED I HAD IT SET UP WRONG. I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG AND I WANTED TO ASK THE CTLR; BUT THE FREQ WAS TOO BUSY. EVENTUALLY; I FIGURED OUT THAT THE LORAN WAS LINKED TO THE HSI. BY THIS TIME I WAS CLOSE TO BREZY AND THE CTLR HANDED ME OFF. THE NEW CTLR GAVE ME DIRECT CMK. I DON'T KNOW OF ANY CONFLICTS WITH OTHER ACFT AND I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW FAR OFF COURSE I WAS; MAYBE 5-10 MI. I AM MUCH MORE CAREFUL NOW ABOUT USING THE NAV RADIOS WHEN FLYING A PLANE EQUIPPED WITH LORAN OR GPS.
