A B737-300LR WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH AN ELEVATOR TAB REPLACED PER THE MAINT MANUAL; BUT IN CONFLICT WITH AN AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE.
Narrative
ON MAY/FRI/00; I RIGGED THE L ELEVATOR TAB ON ACFT XYZ PER MAINT MANUAL. REQUESTED INSPECTION FOR RIG CHK AND SAFETIES; INSPECTION AGREED AND I BELIEVED OK TO CLOSE AREA. UNFORTUNATELY AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE #YX-WXXX; WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY COMPLIED WITH; WAS NOT IN THE MAINT MANUAL OR TAPES BEING USED. ALSO THE TAB INSTALLATION KIT DID NOT REFLECT THE HARDWARE REQUIRED FOR THIS AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE YX-WXXX TO BE ACCOMPLISHED. THEREFORE THE WRONG CASTELLATED NUT WAS INSTALLED. THIS DISCREPANCY WAS FOUND DURING ACCOMPLISHMENT OF A 'Q' CHK AND BROUGHT TO MY ATTN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE INSTALLS A SELF LOCKING CASTELLATED NUT ON THE TAB PUSH ROD. THE RPTR SAID THE PUSH ROD KIT FROM STOCK DID NOT HAVE THIS TYPE NUT BUT ONLY A CASTELLATED NUT AND THE MAINT MANUAL WAS IN ACCORD WITH THE KIT. THE RPTR STATED THIS PUSH ROD WAS INSTALLED. THE RPTR SAID LATER IN A 'Q' CHK; IT WAS DISCOVERED THE SELF LOCKING CASTELLATED NUT WAS NOT INSTALLED AND THE AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE WAS FOUND UNDONE. THE RPTR STATED THAT ENGINEERING WAS ADVISED TO REVISE THE MAINT MANUAL; TAB AND PUSH ROD REPLACEMENT TO REFLECT THIS AIRWORTHINESS DIRECTIVE.
