SMOKE AND FUMES FROM GALLEY OVENS RESULT IN AN EMER DECLARATION AND DIVERSION TO JAX; FL. THERE WAS SOME DIFFICULTY WITH ATC SVC.

Narrative

SMELLED SMOKE LIKE THAT OF BURNT FOOD. FLT ATTENDANT RPTED SMOKE THROUGHOUT THE CABIN. DONNED MASK AND GOGGLES; DECLARED EMER; DIVERTED TO JAX. GOT CLRNC DIRECT AND FOR DSCNT. STARTED THE SMOKE/FUMES CHKLIST. GOT CLRNC FOR VISUAL APCH RWY 13. REDUCED SMOKE MADE OUR DECISION NOT TO EVAC. EMER VEHICLES RESPONDED; CHKED THE OUTSIDE OF THE ACFT; AND FOLLOWED US TO THE GATE. PAX EXITED THROUGH THE JET WAY. MAINT IDENTED A DEFECTIVE OVEN IN THE FORWARD GALLEY. THE ONLY EXTERNAL PROB SEEMED TO BE THE RELATIVE DIFFICULTY GETTING CLRNC TO LOWER ALTS; AND WHAT SEEMED TO BE THE EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF RADIO FREQ CHANGES. PERHAPS ATC COULD GET THE CLRNC THROUGH SECTORS FOR AN EMER ACFT AND KEEP A SINGLE FREQ UNTIL HDOF TO TWR. HAVING A FLT ATTENDANT JUMP SEAT RIDER/MORE THAN FAA MINIMUM CREW ALLOWED ME TO REMAIN IN CONSTANT CONTACT WITH THE CREW DURING THE EVENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 491684: ZJX WAS THE CTLING AGENCY AND INITIALLY GAVE US HDG NOT DIRECTLY TOWARDS THE ARPT AND ALSO GAVE US STEP-DOWN ALTS OF FL260; FL240; AND 16000 FT. WE EMPHATICALLY INSISTED ON LOWER TRYING TO CLARIFY THE WORDS 'EMER ACFT.' ONCE WE WERE GIVEN A LOWER DSCNT AND CLRED TO JAX; EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY. THIS ACFT WAS JUST PARKED FROM THE MAINT HANGAR TO THE GATE. A 2-PERSON COCKPIT KEEPS BOTH PLTS EXTREMELY BUSY.
