A LOW TIME PVT PLT CROSSES RWY 22 WITHOUT CLRNC TO DO SO AT CDW; NJ.
Narrative
GND CTL INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI TO 22-NOVEMBER. I BEGAN TO TAXI THERE THE WAY I KNEW FROM PRIOR EXPERIENCE. I KNEW THAT I WOULD HAVE TO CROSS RWY 4/22. USUALLY THE CTLRS AT CDW DO NOT EXPLICITLY STATE THAT AN ACFT IS CLRED TO CROSS A RWY; BUT I ASK MOST OF THE TIME ANYWAY. THIS TIME I DID NOT ASK. BUT I DID LOOK AT RWYS 4 AND 22 TO ENSURE I WAS CLR PRIOR TO XING A RWY; AND I WAS CLEAR. AFTER I CROSSED 4/22 THE CTLR REPRIHANDED ME FOR CROSSING A RWY. I REPLIED THAT I THOUGHT SHE TOLD ME TO TAXI TO 22-NOVEMBER. SHE REPLIED BACK THAT SHE DID; BUT THAT I WAS TO HAVE EXITED THE RAMP AREA (BRAVO-WEST) THE OPPOSITE WAY AND TAXI OUT TO NOVEMBER. UP UNTIL DEC/TUE/00; I HAVE ALWAYS TAXIED FROM THE SAME LOCATION ON THE FIELD; SINCE I ALWAYS RENTED A PLANE FROM THE SAME FBO. I PURCHASED A PLANE ON DEC/TUE/00 AND HAVE IT TIED DOWN IN A RAMP AREA REFERRED TO AS BRAVO-WEST; WHICH IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD. PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE I HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH TAXIING FROM BRAVO-WEST; AND LITTLE EXPERIENCE TAXIING AROUND THAT AREA. TO AVOID THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN; I WILL: 1) PRIOR TO CALLING GND CTL I'M GOING TO REVIEW THE ARPT SKETCH ON MY COMMERCIAL CHART APCH PLATES; AND MENTALLY NOTE WHICH WAY I WILL TAXI TO A PARTICULAR RWY. 2) AFTER GND CTL INFORMS ME WHERE TO TAXI; I WILL ONCE AGAIN REVIEW MY ARPT SKETCH AND NOTE MY TAXI RTE. 3) I WILL DOUBLECHK EACH TIME THAT I'M CLRED TO CROSS A RWY PRIOR TO XING. 4) I FOUND A WEB SITE THAT HAS A SATELLITE PICTURE OF CDW. I PRINTED IT OUT AND REVIEWED A BIRDS-EYE VIEW OF THE ARPT LAYOUT. I ALSO THINK HAVING AN ARPT DIAGRAM IN THE COMMERCIAL CHART APCH PLATE PUB WOULD HELP; SUCH AS WHAT THEY HAVE FOR SOME OF THE LARGER ARPTS. I ALSO THINK THAT AN ARPT DIAGRAM SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY REVIEWED WITH STUDENTS DURING FLT TRAINING; AND THAT STUDENTS SHOULD GET USED TO TAXIING FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS ON THE FIELD TO ENSURE THAT THEY THOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND HOW THE TXWYS CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER AND RWYS.
