Narrative
UPON DEP FROM RWY 30R AT STL; WE WERE ASSIGNED AN ALT OF 5000 FT AND A HDG OF 335 DEGS. SHORTLY AFTER ROTATION; THE FO POINTED OUT TFC WHICH WAS DEPARTING RWY 30L AND WAS BELOW OUR ALT. TWR CTL THEN GAVE US A HDG OF 340 DEGS AND ASKED US TO CONTACT DEP. THE FO THEN CONTACTED DEP. DEP ASSIGNED US 6000 FT AND TO MAINTAIN 340 DEGS. UPON REACHING 6000 FT; THE DEP CTLR ASSIGNED US A NEW HDG. THE FO READ BACK THE HDG; BUT I HAD NOT HEARD IT BECAUSE WE HAD RECEIVED A TA (TCASII) WHICH WAS ASSOCIATED WITH A SINGLE CHIME AND FLASHING AMBER ANNUNCIATORS. I ASKED THE FO TO GIVE ME THE HDG; BUT HE HAD NOT WRITTEN IT DOWN. I THEN ASKED HIM TO ASK DEP TO REPEAT THE HDG. THE FO ASKED DEP TO REPEAT THE HDG; BUT DEP DID NOT RESPOND. TCASII WAS SHOWING A TARGET BELOW OUR ALT AND TO THE L. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; WE RECEIVED AN RA ASSOCIATED WITH A TRIPLE CHIME AND FLASHING RED ANNUNCIATORS. I BELIEVED THE RA TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TFC TO THE L AND I BEGAN TO CLB. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY; DEP SAID WE WERE CLR OF CONFLICT AND I BEGAN TO LEVEL OFF AT 6300 FT. ATC HAD NEVER ADVISED US OF A CONFLICT OR TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION. THE FO AND I THEN NOTICED TFC ABOUT 1000 FT ABOVE US AND TO THE R WHICH MUST HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE RA. DEP THEN SAID THAT HE SHOWED US AT 6300 FT AND HE ASKED US TO MAINTAIN 6000 FT AND TO TURN TO 270 DEGS. WE WERE GIVEN 15000 FT SHORTLY THEREAFTER AND THE FLT CONTINUED TO LNK NORMALLY.
