D328 PIC PROVIDING OJT TO FIRST TIME FO AND DURING EXPLANATION OF FMS; MISSED ZDC XING RESTR.

Narrative

WHILE CONDUCTING LESSON #1 FLT TRAINING ON A NEW HIRE FO WHO ADMITTEDLY HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH FLT DIRECTORS; FMS; OR AUTOPLTS; WE MISSED A XING RESTR. I DID NOT KNOW THE STUDENT LACKED THIS BASIC KNOWLEDGE UNTIL WE WERE RETURNING FROM OUR FLT TRAINING EXERCISE. WE WERE GIVEN FALKO INTXN AT 10000 FT AND 250 KTS. I WAS DEMONSTRATING THE USE OF VPATH AND FMS FOR DSCNTS. AFTER SETTING UP THE XING RESTR IN THE FMS; THE STUDENT BEGAN TO ASK SEVERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW IT WORKED. I EXPLAINED WE WOULD SEE A TOP OF DSCNT ON THE MFD. I FURTHER EXPLAINED UPON REACHING THE TOP OF DSCNT THE ACFT WOULD CAPTURE A 3 DEG GLIDE PATH AND DSND TO MEET THE XING RESTR; AND THAT THE FLT DIRECTOR WOULD USE THE VPATH MODE FOR VERT NAV. MEANTIME; I MISSED THE FACT THAT THE ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEGUN TO DSND AT THE TIME OF RECEIVING THE CLRNC. WE HAD PASSED THE TOP OF DSCNT SO THE TOP OF DSCNT ON THE MFD NEVER APPEARED AND IN FACT THE GS ON THE ADI REFLECTED THIS. HOWEVER; BECAUSE I WAS SO IMMERSED IN EXPLAINING IT; I SWITCHED TO VERT SPD AND BEGAN A 3000 FPM DSCNT. JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO CONTACT CTR; CTR CALLED ME AND ASKED HOW FAR I SHOWED MYSELF FROM FALKO. I TOLD CTR WE STARTED DOWN A LITTLE LATE. CTR CLRED US TO 15000 FT AND A R TURN 360 DEGS TO REINTERCEPT THE ARR. CTR SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED US TO 13000 FT AND THEN 10000 FT. CTR HANDED US OFF TO DULLES APCH AND I THANKED CTR. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE PROVIDING REMEDIAL ACFT SYS TRAINING TO A NEW HIRE FO IN THE DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT OF AN ACFT RATHER THAN THE SIMULATOR. MY CORRECTIVE ACTIONS WILL BE TO TALK LESS AND TEACH LESS WHILE IN BUSY PHASES OF FLT AND TO SAVE THESE DISCUSSIONS FOR THE DEBRIEF. ALSO; I WILL CONTINUE TO PERSUADE MY EMPLOYER TO NOT TRAIN IN THE ACFT AND TO MOVE ALL TRAINING TO THE SIMULATOR WHERE THE STUDENT CAN LEARN MUCH MORE IN A CTLED ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING SAFETY!
