C414A PLT HAD TRACK DEV AFTER BECOMING DISTR WITH A HYD PUMP FAILURE AT LCH.

Narrative

ACFT HAD TAKEN OFF ON RWY 5; INSTRUCTED TO TURN TO 140 DEGS AND; AFTER REACHING 3000 FT; TURN ON COURSE (230 DEGS); CLRED TO 10000 FT. WHILE CLBING; THE PLT WAS DISTR BY A WARNING LIGHT IN THE COCKPIT AND CONTINUED HIS TURN TO 230 DEGS PRIOR TO REACHING 3000 FT. THE HDG WAS QUESTIONED BY THE CTLR AND THE PLT REALIZED HIS MISTAKE AND APOLOGIZED TO THE CTLR; WHO DID NOT INDICATE THAT ANY TFC CONFLICTS HAD OCCURRED. THE PLT MAINTAINED 3000 FT FOR A WHILE; WHILE THE WARNING LIGHT WAS INVESTIGATED. LATER HE REQUESTED 8000 FT AS A FINAL AND WAS GRANTED THAT ALT. THE WARNING LIGHT TURNED OUT TO BE THE FAILURE OF THE R ENG HYD PUMP; HOWEVER; THE PUMP OF THE L ENG IS SUFFICIENT TO OPERATE ALL SYS SO THE ACFT PROCEEDED THE SHORT DISTANCE TO ITS HOME BASE AT HOUSTON HOBBY. THE PLT SHOULD HAVE NOTIFIED ATC IMMEDIATELY OF THE WARNING LIGHT AND ASKED TO BE CLR OF ANY CONFLICTING TFC UNTIL THE PROB COULD BE INVESTIGATED AND A DECISION ON THE APPROPRIATE ACTION COULD HAVE BEEN MADE SO AS TO ELIMINATE ANY POSSIBLE TFC CONFLICTS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: PLT WAS FLYING A C414A ACFT. THE HYD PUMP SEIZED AND THE SHAFT SHEERED AT THE DESIGN WEAK POINT. PLT INDICATED HE BECAME DISTR WITH THE WARNING LIGHT. AFTER HYD PUMP REPLACEMENT; OP WAS NORMAL.
