A DC9-30 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH #2 ENG OIL FILLER CAP NOT INSTALLED AFTER OIL SVCING.

Narrative

ON EARLY MORNING OF MAR/XA/01; I WAS ASSIGNED AN OVERNIGHT CHK ON A DC9. AT ABOUT XA00 THE WX WAS AROUND -10 DEGS WIND CHILL AND SNOW WAS HVY. I WAS HAVING PROBS SVCING THE ENG OIL WITH AN OIL SVC CART. I NEEDED 4-5 QUARTS PER ENG AND AFTER ABOUT 200 PUMPS I STILL DIDN'T HAVE 1 ENG SVCED SO I GRABBED A GOLF CART AND GOT 6 1-QUART CANS. RETURNED AND FINISHED SVCING 1 ENG AND WENT TO #2 ENG OPEN SVC PANEL AND REMOVED CAP. PLACED CAP ON CART. SVCED OIL AND CLOSED PANEL. FLEW FROM ZZZ TO XYZ. PLT WROTE UP #2 OIL BEING LOW BY 10 QUARTS (IT HOLDS 16 QUARTS). CONTRACT MAINT IN XYZ RPTED CAP MISSING. THEY REPLACED CAP AND SVCED OIL AND SENT IT TO ZZZ. I WAS INFORMED BY THE LEAD WHO HAD THAT AIRPLANE THE NEXT NIGHT. I WENT TO THE GOLF CART I HAD THE NIGHT BEFORE AND FOUND THE OIL CAP. I FEEL THAT THE WX AND THE HEAD COLD I HAD AT THE TIME WERE THE BIGGEST CAUSES. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT I REGRET AND AM VERY GLAD NOBODY WAS HURT. I HAVE BEEN WORKING LINE MAINT FOR 15 YS AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME IT'S HAPPENED TO ME.
