A DC10 ON TKOF AND UP TO 5000 FT EXPERIENCED #2 ENG VIBRATION. SET IDLE PWR AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD. AFTER LNDG; #2 ENG HAD AN UNCONTAINED TURBINE FAILURE AND FIRE.

Narrative

DURING TKOF ON RWY 4 AT BOS; TWR RADIOED WE HAD SPARKS COMING OUT OF #2 ENG. THERE WERE VIBRATIONS BUT INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL. BECAUSE OF THE DEFINITE VIBRATIONS; WE DECIDED TO LAND. WE WERE LIGHTWT AND DID NOT NEED TO DUMP FUEL. #2 THROTTLE WAS PULLED TO IDLE; AND 2 ENG APCH AND LNDG CHKLIST WAS ACCOMPLISHED. JUST PRIOR TO BASE WE GOT A MASTER CAUTION AND NOTED #2 HYD QUANTITY WAS ZERO. WE RAN THE #2 HYD QUANTITY LEAK OR LOSS CHKLIST. DURING LNDG ROLLOUT; MOST LIKELY WHEN GOING INTO REVERSE THRUST; TWR RADIOED #2 ENG WAS ON FIRE. WE STOPPED ON THE RWY; BLEW THE L MAIN CABIN DOOR; AND SLID DOWN THE SLIDE TO EMER EGRESS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS VIBRATING BUT WAS RUNNING AT IDLE PWR UNTIL REVERSING ON THE GND WHEN THE TURBINE EXPERIENCED AN UNCONTAINED FAILURE. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG COWLING AND TAIL SURFACES INCURRED DAMAGE FROM THE UNCONTAINED FAILURE. THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS EVACED AND TROUBLE WAS EXPERIENCED WITH THE ESCAPE SLIDE WHICH WAS BLOWN UP AGAINST THE AIRPLANE. THE RPTR SAID THE FIRE DEPT TOOK 15 MINS TO EXTINGUISH THE ENG FIRE.
