Narrative

AT 3000 FT SOQUEL APCH CTL HAD 'CALLED' MY TURN TO A HDG OF 090 DEGS JUST AFTER I PASSED OVER THE PACIFIC OCEAN COAST. THE WX WAS CLR OVER THE PACIFIC AND FOR ABOUT 3 NM INLAND; BUT BECAME A SOLID UNDERCAST AT ABOUT 2500 FT FURTHER INLAND. SOQUEL APCH CTL TURNED ME OVER TO MONTGOMERY TWR (WHICH WAS ON A TEMPORARY FREQ) AND I RPTED INBOUND AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED. AT ABOUT THIS TIME I TURNED TO 078 DEGS AS THIS WAS THE HDG SHOWN TO THE FIELD BY THE GPS. THE ATIS WX RPTED AT MONTGOMERY FIELD WAS SCATTERED LAYER AT 2500 FT LNDG RWY 28R AND RWY 28L. ABOUT THIS TIME THE UNDERCAST BECOME BROKEN AND I SIGHTED THE FIELD VISUALLY CLOSE TO THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT. MONTGOMERY TWR IMMEDIATELY CLRED ME TO LAND ON RWY 28L AND I STARTED A STEEP DSNDING L TURN. BY THIS TIME THE UNDERCAST HAD TURNED TO A SCATTERED LAYER. AS I ROLLED OUT ON A 280 DEG HDG; THE TWR INFORMED ME THAT I HAD FLOWN THROUGH RWY 28L LOC AND TO BE CAREFUL. I IMMEDIATELY STARTED MOVING L TO LINE UP WITH RWY 28L WHICH IS MUCH NARROWER THAN RWY 28R ( FROM 2 NM ALMOST LOOKS LIKE A TAXI STRIP). THE LNDG WAS UNEVENTFUL. AFTER I HAD SWITCHED TO GND CTL; AND ACFT THAT HAD LANDED (A GOLDEN EAGLE) ASKED GND CTL IF THE BONANZA HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND; AS HE HAD BEEN 'CUT OFF' BY THIS ACFT. THE GND CTLR ASKED THE GOLDEN EAGLE IF THE BONANZA WAS WITHIN 500 FT AND THE GOLDEN EAGLE REPLIED 'AFFIRMATIVE.' GND CTLR SAID HE WOULD HAVE TO INVESTIGATE. AFTER I HAD PARKED THE ACFT; THE PLT OF THE GOLDEN EAGLE CAME OVER TO TALK TO ME AND ASKED IF I WAS CLRED TO LAND; AND I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 28L. HE STATED THAT I CAME WITHIN 150 FT OF HIS ACFT. HE THEN STATED THAT HE WAS GOING TO TALK TO THE TWR PEOPLE AS THEY WERE 'SCREWED UP.' MISTAKE #1 WAS NOT STAYING ON 090 DEG HDG AND TURNING DIRECTLY TOWARD THE ARPT; WHILE BEING CLOSE TO THE ARPT; AND EXPECTING TO BE ON PROPER HDG FOR A DOWNWIND LNDG LEG. MISTAKE #2 WAS TO ACCEPT THE CLRED TO LAND CTLR'S INSTRUCTION WHEN I WAS TOO HIGH AND TOO CLOSE TO THE ARPT; ON THE DOWNWIND LEG; TO LAND WITHOUT OVERSHOOTING THE LOC.
