Narrative
MY SECOND IFR SINCE PASSING THE RATING AT THE END OF NOVEMBER. I'VE BEEN MAINTAINING CURRENCY ON THE SIMULATOR; BUT WAS 1) RUSTY USING 'THE SYS' AND 2) FLYING THE SAME APCHS. TODAY WAS PERFECT FOR DIPPING MY TOE IN. CAVOK AT DEP; SCATTERED ENRTE; OVCST AT DEST WITH RELATIVELY HIGH CEILING. I ELECTED TO TAKE THE C182RG TO PRACTICE LNDG/FLYING THE APCH IN A COMPLEX (LESS THAN 10% OF MY TOTAL TIME IS COMPLEX). ALMOST ALL OF MY INST TRAINING FLTS WERE IN THE C172. ENRTE ALONG A VICTOR AIRWAY; WITH A TRANSITION FROM IAF (INTXN) FLYING (HDG) TO INTERCEPT THE LOC. THE TRANSITION WAS AT 3200 FT. AFTER LOC INTERCEPT; CONTINUED AT 3200 FT TO INTXN DME FROM ILS; THEN DSND TO 1800 FT FOR GS INTERCEPT. I MISSED THAT PART AND FLEW THE LOC AT 3200 FT UNTIL GS INTERCEPT. AT GS INTERCEPT; I CALLED CTAF AND RPTED MY POS (DISTANCE) FROM THE RWY AT THE OM. I REALIZED MY ERROR SHORTLY AFTER THAT WHEN THE OM BEACON WENT OFF. NO HARM WAS DONE; BUT I REALIZE THAT EVEN AN ARPT I AM FAMILIAR WITH VFR MAY HAVE GOTCHAS IN THE INST PROCS. IT WAS A GOOD LESSON.
