BE17 INCURS WING DAMAGE DUE TO GUSTING WINDS ON LNDG.
Narrative
WHILE LNDG AT OGA ON RWY 8; A SMALL LINE OF TSTMS BEAT ME TO THE ARPT BY A FEW SECONDS. ON DOWNWIND; THE ASOS RPTED WINDS AT 030 DEGS AT 16 KTS. WHILE A 50 DEG XWIND AT 16 KTS IS A BIT TO HANDLE IN A BEECH STAGGERING; IT IS NOT DANGEROUS. ON SHORT FINAL IT BEGAN TO RAIN. THE LNDG WAS SMOOTH AND STRAIGHT; BUT AT THE MOMENT; I LOWERED THE TAIL I WAS HIT BY A STRONG GUST THAT I WOULD ESTIMATE WAS 010 DEGS AT 25-30 KTS. THIS OVERWHELMED THE RUDDER CTL; BLEW THE AIRPLANE 20 FT TO THE R AND WXVANED THE TAIL WHICH CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO VEER L STRONGLY. I ADDED PWR AND RAISED THE TAIL AND STOMPED THE R RUDDER AND BRAKE. I WAS ABLE TO REGAIN CTL AFTER A SHORT VEER TO THE L; BUT THE L WHEEL WENT OFF THE RWY BY A FEW FT AND A LNDG LIGHT TORE A SMALL HOLE IN THE L FLAP. NO DAMAGE TO THE LNDG LIGHT OCCURRED. DAMAGE TO THE FLAP WAS UNDER ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. LOOKING BACK; I SHOULD HAVE WAITED FOR A FEW MINS TO SEE WHAT THE RAINSTORM WAS GOING TO DO OR SHOULD HAVE DEVIATED TO ANOTHER ARPT WITH LESS WIND OR LESS XWIND. I COULD HAVE LANDED ON THE R HALF OF THE RWY WHICH WOULD HAVE GIVEN ME MORE ROOM TO RECOVER.
