HDG TRACK DEV WHEN A MIL E-6 TURNS OFF THE ASSIGNED RWY HDG CLRNC WHEN DEPARTING IAB AFB; KS.

Narrative

AS PART OF A TRAINING EVENT (HOP); WE HAD BEEN DOING PLT PROFICIENCY TRAINING (APCHS; VFR PATTERNS) AT MCCONNELL AFB. WE HAD SPENT ABOUT 1 HR AT MCCONNELL; THEN TRANSITIONED OVER TO WICHITA MID-CONTINENT FOR ABOUT 1/2 HR AND HAD COME BACK TO MCCONNELL BEFORE HEADING HOME TO TINKER AFB. OUR CLBOUT INSTRUCTIONS DURING THE FIRST PERIOD OF TRANSITION WORK AT MCCONNELL HAD CONSISTED OF A CLB TO 4000 FT AND A TURN TO HDG 040 DEGS. OUR CLBOUT INSTRUCTIONS AT MID-CONTINENT HAD CONSISTED OF CLBS TO 3000 FT AND TURNS TO HDG 310 DEGS. AFTER OUR FIRST APCH AT MCCONNELL (AFTER RETURNING FROM MID-CONTINENT) WE EXECUTED THE SAME CLBOUT WE HAD EARLIER AT MCCONNELL (CLB TO 4000 FT; TURN HDG 040 DEGS). THIS IS THE CLBOUT WE BELIEVED HAD BEEN GIVEN TO US; COPIED DOWN; AND READ BACK. WICHITA APCH WANTED TO KNOW WHY WE HAD MADE THE TURN TO THE NE. THEY (APCH) SAID OUR CLBOUT HAD BEEN RWY HDG TO 4000 FT. WICHITA APCH MAY WELL HAVE BEEN CORRECT. I EXPLAINED THAT I HAD EXECUTED THE CLBOUT I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN GIVEN AND APOLOGIZED. NO MORE WAS SAID AND WE DID 2 MORE APCHS BEFORE GOING HOME. I BELIEVE WE EXECUTED THE CLBOUT WE HAD EXPECTED BASED ON THE PREVIOUS WORK AT MCCONNELL. CONTRIBUTING TO THE MISCOM; ON OUR PART; WAS THE INSTRUCTION TAKING PLACE COCKPIT TO A NEW 3RD PLT IN THE L SEAT ABOUT THE PREVIOUS TOUCH-AND-G0. IN THE FUTURE; I WILL BE MORE VIGILANT TOWARD MY CLBOUT INSTRUCTIONS; ESPECIALLY WITH REGARDS TO EXPECTATIONS BASED ON PREVIOUS WORK.
