Narrative
FLYING THE TIP TOE VISUAL TO RWY 28L AT SFO. FO WAS PF. I (CAPT) WAS PNF. ATC TOLD US TO MAINTAIN VISUAL WITH A HAWKER JET WHICH WAS WELL ABOVE AND SLIGHTLY AHEAD ON THE VISUAL FOR RWY 28R. WE WERE ASSIGNED TO MAINTAIN SPD 160 KTS TO THE SAN MATEO BRIDGE. THEREAFTER; WE IMMEDIATELY STARTED SLOWING TO TARGET SPD OF 140 KTS AND FLAPS 30 DEGS. AROUND 500 FT AGL; IT BECAME APPARENT THAT WE WERE CATCHING UP THE HAWKER. BY 200 FT AGL; THE HAWKER WAS SLIGHTLY BEHIND OUR R WING; BUT WE ALWAYS DID HAVE HIM IN SIGHT AND MAINTAINED VISUAL. MY QUESTION; AND CONCERN; IS THAT WE WEREN'T SURE IF IT'S WRONG TO COME ABEAM; AND SLIGHTLY PASS; THE OTHER ACFT ON SHORT FINAL; AS LONG AS WE MAINTAIN VISUAL CONTACT. ATC SAID NOTHING TO US DURING THIS TIME OR AFTER. I CONSIDERED A GAR BUT THOUGHT IT WAS UNNECESSARY; OR POSSIBLY MORE HAZARDOUS; SINCE WE WERE EXACTLY ON PROFILE AND THE HAWKER WAS ALSO LINED UP WITH HIS RWY. I TOLD THE FO TO SLOW AS MUCH AND AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE SO AS NOT TO PASS. HE DID; BUT WE REACHED TARGET AND STILL SLOWLY CAUGHT UP TO THE HAWKER.
