A C172 PLT HAS AN NMAC WITH A C206 AS HE IS BREAKING GND DURING A TOUCH AND GO AT 48V; CO.

Narrative

ON MAR/XA/01; AT APPROX XA45 LCL I WAS INVOLVED IN THE FOLLOWING INCIDENT AT ERIE TRI-COUNTY ARPT; CO (48V). I WAS THE PLT; AND SOLE OCCUPANT; OF A RENTED C172; PRACTICING ARPT ENTRY PROCS AND TOUCH AND GOES. I HOLD A COMMERCIAL PLT CERTIFICATE; INST AIRPLANE RATING. THIS FLT WAS CONDUCTED IN VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS AND NO VFR FLT PLAN WAS FILED. AFTER RPTING MY POS ON CTAF 5 MI OUT; OVER THE ARPT; ENTERING ON THE 45 DEG; AND THEN DOWNWIND WITH NO OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT OR ON FREQ; I HEARD; ACFT Y RPT DOWNWIND; SAYING EITHER 'BEHIND YOU' OR 'NUMBER TWO.' I THEN RPTED TURNING BASE; THEN FINAL; EACH TIME RPTING THAT IT WOULD BE A TOUCH AND GO; EACH TIME HEARING ACFT Y RPTING SHORTLY THEREAFTER HIS POS. I NEVER COULD SEE THIS AIRPLANE; SO I KEPT MY SPD UP AND WASTED NO TIME OR DISTANCE IN MY TURNS OR LNDG. I MADE MY LNDG (RWY 33) AND PREPARED TO CONTINUE MY TOUCH AND GO. AS I WAS JUST LIFTING OFF I SAW ACFT Y SPD BY ME OFF MY R SIDE IN VERY CLOSE PROX AND WITH NO WARNING. I JUDGED AND DISTANCE NO MORE THAN A WINGSPAN OR TWO AWAY; SPD APPROX 100 KTS; HT 10-20 FT ABOVE THE GND. FROM WHAT I COULD TELL; THERE WAS NO TXWY ON THAT SIDE; JUST GRASS AND GRAVEL; WITH HOMES IMMEDIATELY BEYOND THAT AS THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AIR PARK. I IMMEDIATELY ASKED WHO THE C206 WAS THAT JUST PASSED ME ON THE RWY; ALTHOUGH I SAW HIS TYPE; PAINT SCHEME; AND MOST OF HIS TAIL NUMBER. HE DID NOT RESPOND. AT THIS TIME I WAS NOW LIFTING OFF THE GND; AS I DID ACFT Y MADE A STEEP L TURN DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME; BTWN 100-200 FT ABOVE THE GND. I AGAIN ASKED HIM WHAT HE WAS DOING; NO RESPONSE. THE LAST I SAW ACFT Y HE WAS MAKING A VERY LOW DOWNWIND; NO MORE THAN 500 FT AGL. I CLBED UP TO PATTERN ALT AND CONTINUED MY PATTERN WORK; OCCASIONALLY HEARING ACFT Y BUT NEVER SEEING HIM. ON ABOUT MY THIRD TOUCH AND GO; ACFT Y ASKED ME EITHER WHERE I WAS; WHERE I WAS FROM; OR IF I WAS FROM THERE (48V). I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHICH; BUT I GAVE MY POS AS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RWY AS I WAS ABOUT TO EXECUTE ANOTHER TKOF FROM A TOUCH AND GO. THAT WAS MY LAST CONTACT WITH ACFT Y.
