C206 FLC APPARENTLY INCUR INTO LAX CLASS B WHILE FLYING INTO THE LAX VFR CLASS B CORRIDOR.

Narrative

DEPARTED LGB ARPT WITH THE INTENT OF TRANSITIONING THE LAX CLASS B AIRSPACE USING THE HOLLYWOOD TRANSITION OFF THE VNY 140 DEG RADIAL. CLBED TO 4500 FT MSL AND SECOND PLT IN ACFT; WHO WAS OPERATING RADIOS; CONTACTED APCH CTL AND REQUESTED FLT FOLLOWING AND CLRNC THROUGH THE 'VFR CORRIDOR.' APCH ADVISED NO CLRNC WAS NECESSARY; TO SQUAWK CODE ABCD AND GO TO THE ADVISORY FREQ. SINCE THE INCORRECT TERM HAD BEEN USED BY THE PLT OPERATING THE RADIOS; ATC WAS CONFUSED AS TO OUR INTENTIONS. IT WAS DECIDED TO MANEUVER OVER TO THE SANTA MONICA VOR 132 DEG RADIAL AND TRANSITION THE VFR CORRIDOR. THE ADVISORY FREQ WAS SELECTED; ABCD SQUAWKED; AND THE ACFT WAS MANEUVERED TO THE 132 DEG RADIAL. THIS MANEUVER WAS MADE CLOSE TO THE CLASS B AIRSPACE BOUNDARY AND THERE WAS A MOMENT OF CONFUSION AS TO WHETHER THE ACFT HAD CROSSED THE CLASS B BOUNDARY OR CUT ACROSS A CORNER WHILE INTERCEPTING THE RADIAL. A DISCUSSION WAS CONDUCTED WITH THE PLT OPERATING THE RADIOS. THE CLASS B VFR TCA CHART HAD BEEN THOROUGHLY REVIEWED PRIOR TO FLT AND BOTH PLTS WERE FAMILIARIZED WITH THE TYPES OF VFR TRANSITIONS AVAILABLE AND THE PROPER WAYS TO NAV THEM. IT WAS CONCLUDED BY BOTH PLTS THAT BETTER ATTN SHOULD HAVE BEEN PAID TO THE ACTUAL TERMS USED TO DESCRIBE THE TRANSITIONS. THIS COULD HAVE HELPED AVOID THIS CONFUSION AND TYPE OF SIT. IN THE FUTURE; BOTH PLTS AGREED THAT PROPER ATTN SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE NAMES OF THE INDIVIDUAL TRANSITIONS AND TO NOT GIVE THEM ALL THE GENERIC NAME VFR CORRIDOR.
