MD80 CREW HAD #2 ENG FAIL AFTER TKOF AT LAS.

Narrative

DEPARTING RWY 19L AT LAS DEST PDX. 29 DEGS C; FLAPS 11 DEGS; NORMAL PWR; MD80 ACFT; 132000 LBS. ON TKOF LEG APPROX 600 FT AGL; THE R ENG DISPLAYED A SLIGHT PWR SURGE. A FEW SECONDS LATER 3 LOUD BANGS WERE HEARD WITH VERY NOTICEABLE AIR FRAME BUFFET. ENG INDICATIONS CONFIRMED IT WAS AGAIN THE R ENG. PWR WAS REDUCED TO IDLE AND NO FURTHER NOISE OR VIBRATION WAS FELT. ROTATION WAS INDICATED ON N1 AND N2 AND EGT NEVER INDICATED AN OVERTEMP. DECLARED AN EMER; ENTERED L DOWNWIND TO THE RWYS 25; AND REQUESTED AN IMMEDIATE LNDG. LANDED RWY 25R. TWR ADVISED NO VISIBLE PROBS ON R SIDE. SECURED THE ENG ONCE CLR OF RWY. AIRBORNE APPROX 4 MINS. EMER SVCS MET THE ACFT AT THE RWY AND FOLLOWED US TO THE GATE TO DEPLANE PAX. OVERWT LNDG WAS GREATER THAN 130000 LBS (2000 LBS OVER). BRAKE OVERHEAT LIGHT CAME ON AT GATE BUT WE HAD COOLING FANS ALREADY IN PLACE. NO APPARENT WHEEL OR BRAKE PROBS. THE PROB AT FIRST THOUGHT APPEARED TO BE COMPRESSOR STALLS; BUT I FELT OUR CONDITIONS WERE NOT RIGHT FOR THAT. AFTER CONFERRING WITH MAINT AND SOME INSPECTING; METAL PIECES WERE FOUND IN TAILPIPE. I WAS TOLD THIS WOULD INDICATE AT LEAST PARTIAL TURBINE FAILURE. I'M FILING THIS RPT ON THE ADVICE OF MY PLT ORGANIZATION SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE.
