E145 CAPT PROVIDING IOE BECOMES DISTRACTED WITH INSTRUCTION AND MISSES FREQ CHANGE WHILE ENRTE TO PIT AT FL240.
Narrative
DEPARTING RIC ENRTE TO PIT; WE EITHER MISSED A CTR HDOF OR WERE GIVEN AN INCORRECT FREQ; AND NO ONE CAUGHT THE PROB ON THE CTR CHK-IN WITH ZDC. 'RADIO TFC' SOUNDED NORMAL THROUGHOUT THE FLT. WE REALIZED WE HAD A PROB WHEN WE ENTERED THE STANDARD ALT XING RESTR INTO THE FMS DATA THAT IS PUBLISHED ON THE STAR. IT SHOWED US THAT IT WOULD TAKE A 6.8 DEG GLIDE PATH TO MAKE THIS XING RESTR. WE CONTACTED ZDC ON THE FREQ WE HAD BEEN MONITORING. THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHO OR WHERE WE WERE AND ADVISED US TO RETURN TO PREVIOUS FREQ. WE WERE OUT OF RANGE OF THE PREVIOUS FREQ. IT TOOK APPROX 5-7 MINS TO GET ON THE APPROPRIATE FREQ. IN THE MEANTIME; WE CROSSED THE NESTO INTXN AT FL240 INSTEAD OF THE PUBLISHED STAR INSTRUCTIONS TO EXPECT 10000 FT. WE WERE GIVEN DSCNT VECTORS TO REJOIN THE ARR AND CROSSED NESTO AGAIN; THIS TIME AT 10000 FT. I WAS GIVING INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE (IOE) INSTRUCTION WHILE AT CRUISE ALT AND PROPER RADIO VIGILANCE AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS SUFFERED AS A RESULT OF INSTRUCTION.
