SECOND LEG OF SOLO LONG XCOUNTRY. BEGAN CLB ON COURSE TO CASPER (CPR) FROM THERMOPOLIS (THP). TOOK FLT LOG FROM FLT BAG. FROM FLT LOG DETERMINED HDG SHOULD BE 013 DEGS. TURNED TO NEW HDG. AS FLT PROGRESSED; TERRAIN FEATURES DID NOT MATCH SECTIONAL CHART. WHEN UNABLE TO ORIENT ACFT LOCATION ON TO MAP; TURNED AND IDENTED CRAZY WOMAN VOR. CTRED CDI WITH A 'TO' FLAG. HOWEVER; FLEW IN OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF HDG. STILL COULD NOT ORIENT ACFT PROPERLY. FINALLY RADIOED CASPER APCH TO ASK FOR THEIR HELP SINCE I WAS LOST. CPR APCH REQUESTED I COMPLETE VOR ORIENTATION SOLUTION TO USING CZI AND MUDDY MT (DDY) VORS. RECEPTION BEGAN TO APCH REQUESTED CLB TO 11000 FT WHILE SQUAWKING 7700 TO ALLOW ZLC TO IDENT AND CONFIRM LOCATION. CPR APCH INQUIRED ABOUT TERRAIN FEATURES AND I WAS ABLE TO IDENT CORRECTLY. I VERIFIED MY POS AND CONTINUED MY FLT ON TO CASPER. CAUSE OF SIT WAS SELECTION FO WRONG FLT PLAN; RELIANCE ON FLT INSTRUCTOR'S APPROVAL OF FLT PLAN; INABILITY TO CORRELATE TERRAIN FEATURES WITH SECTIONAL CHART (NOT LOOKING AT A LARGER PORTION OF THE CHART) A MISINTERP OF VOR DISPLAY.
