A LOW TIME PVT PLT IN A C172 COMES TOO CLOSE TO SKYDIVERS WHEN SHE DEPARTS AFTER A JUMP HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED AND JUMPERS IN SIGHT AT GRE; IL.

Narrative

I KNEW THAT JUMPERS WERE JUMPING AT GREENVILLE. I WAS LISTENING TO CTAF AND I HEARD THAT THEY WERE OFF. I HAD HEARD THAT WHEN THE JUMPERS JUMPED THEY AVOIDED FLYING DIRECTLY OVER THE RWY. I WAS READY FOR TKOF ON RWY 18 AND I HAD VISUAL CONTACT WITH THE JUMPERS. THEY LOOKED PLENTY HIGH FOR ME TO GO AHEAD AND TAKE OFF. I THOUGHT THAT SINCE I HAD THEM IN SIGHT I COULD PROCEED. BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE END OF THE TKOF ROLL; THEY WERE A LOT CLOSER AND DIRECTLY OVER THE RWY. I GUESS THE MAJOR CAUSE OF THE PROB WAS THAT I GOT IMPATIENT. THEY LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE MOVING SLOWLY AND I THOUGHT I HAD PLENTY OF TIME. I SHOULD HAVE JUST WAITED. ADDITIONALLY; I SHOULDN'T HAVE TAKEN HEARSAY FOR FACT CONCERNING THE OP OF THE JUMPERS. I SHOULD HAVE VERIFIED. I ALSO SHOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT THAT JUST BECAUSE THE JUMPERS LOOKED SLOW THAT THEY WERE. I AM NOT NORMALLY OPERATING AROUND JUMPERS; AND I AM ALWAYS NERVOUS AND UNSURE OF PROPER PROCS. I GUESS THE NEXT STEP FOR ME IS TO TALK TO AN INSTRUCTOR ABOUT JUMPING OPS. IT WOULD BE NICE IF JUMPERS PUBLISHED A FLYER OR SOMETHING AND HUNG IT AT THE ARPT WHERE THEY OPERATE.
