Narrative
THIS FLT BEGAN IN GRAND FORKS; ND; ENDING IN GRAND FORKS; ND. ITS PURPOSE WAS TO COMPLETE LESSONS 9 AND 10 FROM COURSE 112 AT PART 141 APPROVED FLYING SCHOOL. MY STUDENT IS A PVT PLT AND COURSE 112 BRINGS HIM BACK UP TO SPD ON PVT PLT PRACTICAL TEST STANDARDS AND SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCS. LESSON 9 WAS A VFR DAY XCOUNTRY FLT THAT ENDED IN FARGO; ND. LESSON 10 BEGAN IN FARGO AND WAS NIGHT VFR XCOUNTRY CONSISTING OF A LNDG AT AN ARPT OTHER THAN THE DEPARTING ARPT WITH A TOTAL DISTANCE OF 100 NM. THE RTES ALL MET THE SPECS STATED IN TRAINING COURSE OUTLINE. THE PROB THAT HAS COME TO MY ATTN IS THAT I WAS NOT 90 DAY CURRENT FOR PIC WITH CARRIAGE OF PAX AT NIGHT. I REALIZED THIS WHEN I WAS LOGGING THE EVENING. I JUST BEGAN WORKING AS A FLT INSTRUCTOR AT THE SCHOOL ON JUN/THU/01. UPON BEGINNING FLT TRAINING WITH MY STUDENT I FOUND MYSELF IN AN AIRPLANE MORE THAN EVER BEFORE. THIS FREQUENT CONTACT WITH THE AIRPORT AND ACFT I BELIEVE CAUSED ME TO OVERSIGHT MY OWN PERSONAL CURRENCY. I DID NOT QUESTION IT SINCE I WAS FLYING SO FREQUENTLY. I ASKED MY STUDENT IF HE WAS CURRENT AT NIGHT AND HE STATED HE HASN'T FLOWN AT NIGHT IN 6 MONTHS OR SO. I STILL DID NOT QUESTION MY OWN CURRENCY AND STATED THAT WE WOULD GET 3 LNDGS AT NIGHT IN SO HE WOULD BE CURRENT. THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER PLT/PAX IN THE BACK SEAT JUST SO YOU KNOW THERE WAS A TOTAL OF THREE PEOPLE IN THE AIRPLANE. AS A YOUNG CFI; IT IS IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT YOURSELF AS I WAS TEACHING MY STUDENT ABOUT REGS DEALING WITH NIGHT REQUIREMENTS; YET I MYSELF WAS NOT CURRENT. I CAN THINK OF 2 WAYS TO KEEP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. FIRST; WOULD BE TO CHECK CURRENCY BEFORE EVERY FLT. LITERALLY OPEN YOUR LOGBOOK AND FIGURE OUT WHEN YOUR CURRENCY IS UP FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU'RE RATED FOR -- SINGLE ENGINE; MULTI ENGINE; DAY; NIGHT; INST; BIANNUAL FLT REVIEW; FLT INSTRUCTOR RATING; ETC. SECOND; REFLECT ON WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING; AND ENSURE YOU ARE COMPLYING WITH THE REGS THAT YOU ARE PREACHING. WHEN TEACHING I THINK THERE MIGHT BE A TENDENCY TO FOCUS YOUR ATTN ON YOUR STUDENT MAKING SURE THEY ARE UP TO PAR; FORGETTING TO ENSURE YOU ARE UP TO PAR.
