EVENTS OF FLT FROM YAP ISLAND (PTYA) TO PORT MORESBY (AYPY) ON JUL/WED/01. RTE OF FLT: PTYA DIRECT YP DIRECT KEONE DIRECT FACED DIRECT MAG DIRECT TSL DIRECT KUB DIRECT AYPA. WE CRUISED MACH .80 AT FL390 TO FACED; THEN FL410. THE TRIP BEGAN ROUTINELY UNTIL 50 MI FROM FACED. AT THAT POINT DUE TO TSTMS; WE REQUESTED THROUGH SAN FRANCISCO COMMERCIAL RADIO TO ZOA FLT; A CLB TO FL410. ZOA ADVISED US TO PLACE THE REQUEST WITH MADANG RADIO. BUT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO ESTABLISH COM WITH MADANG. AND THE SEVERITY OF WX FORCED US TO CLB FOR SAFETY OF FLT; TO FL415. WE CHOSE FL415 TO AVOID ANY POSSIBLE TFC CONFLICT. AT NUMEROUS TIMES; ON BOTH HF FREQS AND VHF FREQS; WE TRIED TO CONTACT MADANG CTR; BUT WERE UNABLE TO. WE HAD AN ACR PLANE RELAY FOR US; RPTING OUR ALT AS FL415. WE WERE FORCED TO MAINTAIN FL415 TO STAY OUT OF SEVERE WX. AND WHEN WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO CONTACT MADANG CTR; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO MAINTAIN FL410. NEVER AT ANY TIME WAS A TFC CONFLICT INDICATED ON OUR TCASII SYS. WE TOOK THE INITIATIVE OF CLBING TO FL415 TO ENSURE SAFETY OF FLT.
