Synopsis

A DHC-8 CREW TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI FOR TKOF.

Narrative

TAXING FOR RWY 21 IN FLG; THE FO AND I NOTICED A HERD OF PRAIRIE DOGS SCURRYING ACROSS THE TXWY. MOMENTARILY DISTRACTED BY THIS UNUSUAL SIGHT; I ROLLED PAST THE FAINTLY PAINTED HOLD SHORT LINE. STOPPING ABOUT 6 FT PAST THE FIRST HOLD LINE; I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER DIMLY PAINTED HOLD LINE IN FRONT OF ME. SINCE THERE ARE TWO HOLD LINES ON THIS TXWY AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM ARE MARKED BY A HOLDING POSITION SIGN; I AM NOT SURE WHICH HOLD LINE TO USE. THE ONLY HOLD LINE WITH A HOLD POSITION SIGN ON IT IS COMING OUT OF THE RUN UP AREA. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES THAT; ALTHOUGH NOT DEPICTED ON THE RWY CHART; 'PAPA' THE PARALLEL CONTAINS A LOOP AT THE APCH END OF RWY 21. THE RPTR ELECTED TO CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON 'PAPA' INSTEAD OF USING THE LOOP; THIS IS WHERE HE ENCOUNTERED THE FADED HOLD LINES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO: A 'KFLG' TWR SPECIALISTS STATED THAT A LOOP; 'ALPHA LOOP' HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED AT THE END OF RWY 21 WHICH IS THE NORMAL TAXI RTE. THE OLD PARALLEL IS STILL THERE; INCLUDING THE FADED HOLD LINE; HOWEVER IT IS NOT MAINTAINED BY THE ARPT. THIS EXPLAINS THE FADED HOLD LINES. THERE IS ALSO A 'GULF LOOP' AT THE APCH END OF RWY 3. THESE LOOPS ARE THE BEGINNING OF A NEW PARALLEL WHICH WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING 'PAPA' IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE LARGER ACFT.
