Narrative
ON 7/TUE/2001 WX CONDITIONS AT MIA WERE VFR WITH CB'S W THRU N MOVING E. OUR ACR ACFT WAS A MD-82. DEPARTING ON RWY 26L WE ASKED FOR AND RECEIVED A 180 DEG HEADING AFTER DEPARTURE. THE TKOF ROLL WAS UNEVENTFUL HOWEVER; AT APPROX 600 FT THE L ENG HAD SEVERE COMPRESSOR STALLS. EPR WENT TO 0.0 AND EGT WENT TO TOP OF SCALE (800 DEG CELSIUS). AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND CLRNC TO LAND WAS GIVE ON ANY RWY. THE ENG FAILURE CHKLIST INITIATED HOWEVER THE ENG WAS FOUND TO STILL BE PRODUCING LIMITED THRUST. THE DECISION WAS MADE NOT TO SHUT IT DOWN CONFIGURE THE ACFT TO LAND AND LAND ON RWY 30 ASAP. THIS WAS BASED ON THE POSSIBILITY OF THE WX MOVING OVER THE FIELD. AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING WAS ACCOMPLISHED ON RWY 30. GND CREWS VERIFIED THE ENG WAS SECURE AND THE ACFT WAS TAXIED TO THE GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS AP AND W JT8D-217C AND THE FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A NOZZLE GUIDE VANE COMING LOOSE AND PASSING THROUGH THE HIGH AND LOW PRESSURE TURBINE. THE RPTR SAID THE RESULT WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE TURBINE SECTION.
