A COMMANDER 114 PLT CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 12/30 WITHOUT CLRNC AT MMU; NJ.

Narrative

I WAS GIVEN TAXI CLRNC BY THE LCL GND CTLR. AT THE SAME TIME; TWO OTHER ACFT WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGNS CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC; ALONG WITH OTHER ACFT. THE CTLR; CALLING MY PROPER CALL SIGN; CLRED ME TO 'TAXI TO RWY 23; HOLD SHORT.' I READ BACK THE INSTRUCTION AND WHEN I RELEASED MY PUSH TO TALK SWITCH ANOTHER OF THE ACFT WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGNS WAS READING BACK MY INSTRUCTIONS. THERE; AT THIS TIME WAS A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF CONFUSION ON THE RADIO; WITH THE CTLR TALKING TO ONE AIRPLANE; AND ANOTHER ACFT ANSWERING AND THE CTLR CALLING THE WRONG CALL SIGN. I CONTINUED MY TAXI. TO GET TO RWY 23; THE ACTIVE RWY; FROM THE RAMP; ONE MUST CROSS RWY 12/30. AT THE TIME; THE TWR CTLR HAD CLRED AN ACFT TO TKOF ON RWY 12. AS I TAXIED ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE; THE CTLR YELLED FOR ANOTHER ACFT TO STOP. ALTHOUGH HE DIDN'T CALL MY CALL SIGN; I STOPPED MY AIRPLANE; LOOKED TO MY LEFT AND SAW THE ACFT PASS OVERHEAD. THE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS FOR THIS TYPE OF INCIDENT REQUIRES THE FOLLOWING: ON MY PART; IF I SUSPECT IN THE SLIGHTEST THAT MY MESSAGE TO THE CTLR HAD NOT BEEN HEARD; I NOW WAIT AND CALL AGAIN TO CONFIRM. ALSO AT THE SMALLER ARPTS 'C' TO 'D'; I STOP AT ALL RWY CROSSING; LOOK BOTH WAYS AND THEN PROCEED.
