AN R22 HELI INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT; WHEN MAKING CLRING TURN FOR TKOF WHILE ON RWY; DISCOVERED AN ACFT ON THE RWY WHO HAD JUST LANDED.

Narrative

I WAS PERFORMING MULTIPLE APCHS TO IJD; IN THIS CASE A NORMAL APCH. MY STUDENT AND I CLRED THE SKIES AND PERFORMED THE RECOMMENDED RADIO CALLS ON R DOWNWIND; R BASE AND FINAL APCH. AS WE WERE PREPARING FOR ANOTHER PATTERN; WE DID A 360 DEG CLRING TURN; AND WE DISCOVERED A SMALL AIRPLANE TAXIING DOWN THE RWY; OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE APCH. I TRIED TO ESTABLISH RADIO CONTACT WITH THE PLT; BUT THERE WAS NO ANSWER. AT THIS TIME WE MADE A RADIO CALL AND CLRED THE RWY; AS I THOUGHT HE WAS BACK-TAXIING FOR A DEP. AT THE TIME WE SAT THE HELI DOWN IN THE GRASS N OF RWY 27; I CHKED MY SECTIONAL TO MAKE SURE I WAS ON THE APPROPRIATE FREQ; WHICH I WAS AND THIS WAS ALSO CONFIRMED BY OTHER TFC ANNOUNCING ON THE FREQ I USED. WHEN WE SAT IN THE GRASS WE COULD SEE THE PLT WENT BACK TO THE TXWY. AT THIS TIME I ASSUMED THAT HE WAS CHKING HIS PLANE. MY STUDENT AND I PROCEEDED WITH THE LESSON AS PLANNED AND RETURNED TO OUR BASE. LATER THE OTHER PLT SAID HE WAS ON THE WRONG FREQ DUE TO AN EXPIRED SECTIONAL CHART; AND THAT HE ALMOST HIT US ON THE RWY (RWY INCURSION). IT IS CLR THAT I MISSED HIM WHEN I CLRED THE SKY; AND I CAN PREVENT SITS LIKE THIS IN THE FUTURE BY SPENDING MORE TIME THAN I ALREADY DO TO CLR THE SKY; BUT HE SHOULD ALSO REFER TO THE FAR AND USE A CURRENT SECTIONAL CHART WHICH HAS THE APPROPRIATE FREQ.
