C182 PLT INADVERTENTLY ENTERS AND LANDS AT A NORMALLY UNCTLED TWR ARPT THAT HAS A TEMPORARY TWR. HIS EFFORTS TO RAISE SOMEONE ON 2 DIFFERENT UNICOM FREQS WAS TO NO AVAIL.

Narrative

OUR FLT OF 3; 2 C182'2 AND 1 C172; DEPARTED VFR FOR APPLETON; WI. BECAUSE OF IFR WX AT APPLETON; WE LANDED AT STEVENS POINT; WI; TO REGROUP. AFTER WAITING IT OUT FOR ABOUT 1 HR; AND DECIDING THAT THE APPLETON WX WAS NOT GOING TO IMPROVE ANYTIME SOON AND FOND DU LAC WAS CLR; WE DEPARTED FOR FOND DU LAC. THE C172 DECIDED TO LAND AT WAUTOMA; WI; FOR FUEL AND THE 2 C182'S; WITH ME IN THE LEAD; CONTINUED ON TO FOND DU LAC. I CHOSE A HDG THAT WOULD TAKE US OVER THE NE END OF GREEN LAKE AND WENT FROM 2000 FT TO 3500 FT TO AVOID THE RIPON TFC. I HAD AN APCH CHART OUT FOR FOND DU LAC AND TUNED IN 126.82 BUT HEARD NOTHING. NEXT WENT TO 122.8 AND ANNOUNCED OUR POS AS '3 MI W LNDG RWY 9.' I WAS ALSO BUSY LOOKING OUT FOR TFC; AND HAD THE BACK SEAT PAX LOOKING ALSO. I WAS ALSO ADVISING THE LOW TIME PLT FLYING ON GETTING THE AIRPLANE SLOWED UP AND DOWN. I HEARD NO RESPONSE FROM THE UNICOM UNTIL WE WERE ON THE RWY WHEN THEY TOLD THE C182 BEHIND ME THAT THERE WAS A 'TEMPORARY TWR' IN USE. TALK ABOUT A SICKENING FEELING! 40 YRS OF FLYING AND 10000+ HRS AND MAKE A SCREW-UP LIKE THAT! I'VE BEEN INTO FOND DU LAC A FEW TIMES OVER THE YRS AND JUST DIDN'T CONSIDER IT A VERY 'BIG' ARPT AND FLAT SPACED OUT THE FACT THAT THERE MIGHT OR WOULD BE A TEMPORARY TWR THERE. HAD THAT BEEN OUR ORIGINAL DEST INSTEAD OF APPLETON; I WOULD HAVE TAKEN TIME TO CHK WITH FSS; ETC; ABOUT FREQS; ETC. I; AS PIC; THOUGH DO ASSUME ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE SCREW-UP AND I CONTRIBUTE THE CAUSE OF IT TO THE FACT THAT I HAD A CUSTOMER HIT ME WITH A MALICIOUS LAWSUIT 2 1/2 YRS AGO AND IT HAS CAUSED ME CONSIDERABLE FINANCIAL AND EMOTIONAL STRESS. I HAVE RESTR MYSELF TO VFR FLT BECAUSE OF THIS FOR THE LAST 2 YRS BECAUSE OF THE EFFECT THAT LAWSUIT HAS HAD ON ME AND MY DECISION MAKING AS WELL AS PLT SKILLS.
