Synopsis

GLOBE SWIFT GC1B AND BEECHCRAFT TWIN HAD CLOSER THAN COMFORTABLE SPACING AT RKS.

Narrative

I HAD LANDED AT ROCK SPRINGS ARPT (RKS) ON RWY 9 AND TAKEN ON FUEL. AWOS RPTED LIGHT WIND FROM THE E. WHEN I WAS TAXIING OUT ON THE PARALLEL TXWY TO RWY 9; A PITTS LANDED ON RWY 9. JUST BEFORE I WAS READY TO DEPART RWY 9; I PUT ON MY HEADSET AND SAID SWIFT DEPING RWY 9. ON CLBOUT; AS I WAS ABOUT TO MAKE A L TURN TO XWIND TO DEPART THE AREA; I NOTICED A BEECHCRAFT TWIN ON FINAL TO RWY 27. I WAS ABOVE HIM AND N OF HIM; HEADED N AND SAW HIM TAKE NO EVASIVE ACTION. ON THE RADIO HE WANTED TO KNOW WHO TOOK OFF WHEN HE WAS ON FINAL. I RESPONDED THAT RWY 9 HAD BEEN THE ACTIVE AND THE LAST ACFT LANDED (THE PITTS) ON RWY 9. I BELIEVE HE WAS MAKING A STRAIGHT-IN TO RWY 27 AND I DIDN'T HEAR ANY OF HIS XMISSIONS (IF HE MADE ANY) TO THAT EFFECT; BECAUSE I DIDN'T PUT ON MY HEADSET UNTIL JUST BEFORE TKOF. I DIDN'T SEE HIM ON A LONG FINAL TO RWY 27 EITHER. I DIDN'T CONSIDER THE EVENT A NEAR MISS. RKS IS AN UNCTLED FIELD AND EVERYONE (INCLUDING TWINS; CPR; ETC) NEEDS TO HAVE THEIR EYES OUTSIDE OF THE COCKPIT; EVEN IF IT IS A CTLED FIELD; YOUR HEAD SHOULD BE ON A SWIVEL.
