Narrative
AT ROC ARPT; GND CTL CLRED US TO TAXI TO RWY 22 WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 28 AT TXWY D. GND THEN TOLD US TO MONITOR TWR; WHO DIRECTED US TO MAKE A R TURN ONTO RWY 28; A R TURN ONTO RWY 22; AND A 180 DEG TURN. MY FO AND I BOTH BELIEVE THAT TWR WANTED US TO MAKE THE 180 DEG TURN AT THE CONSTRUCTION HOLD LINE (DISPLACED THRESHOLD). NEXT; WE HEARD THE TWR TELL AN ACFT (WITH A CALL SIGN OF 'ACFT Y') TO GO AROUND; FOLLOWED BY WORDS TO US 'ACFT X; I NEEDED YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE OF...' (SOMETHING HERE WAS SAID I'M NOT SURE OF). I THEN SAID TO THE TWR CTLR THAT I REALLY BELIEVED HE WANTED THE 180 DEG TURN INTO POS AT THE CONSTRUCTION DISPLACED THRESHOLD ON RWY 22. FURTHERMORE; I SAID TO HIM I WAS EXTREMELY SORRY IF I DID NOT UNDERSTAND HIS INSTRUCTIONS AS HE MEANT THEM. HE CLRED OUR FLT FOR TKOF AND TURNED US OVER TO DEP CTL. MY FO AND I CAREFULLY AND COMPLETELY WENT OVER THESE EVENTS AND WE BELIEVE WE FOLLOWED TWR'S DIRECTIONS. I'M WRITING THIS RPT BECAUSE THE EVENT WAS A VALUABLE LESSON FOR ME REGARDING HOW EASILY THE MEANING OF INSTRUCTIONS CAN BE PERCEIVED INCORRECTLY. ADDITIONALLY; I'LL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BE ABSOLUTELY SURE OF TAXI INSTRUCTIONS; PARTICULARLY THOSE INVOLVING NONSTANDARD RTES DUE TO ARPT CONSTRUCTION.
