A BEECH BONANZA PLT ENCOUNTERS UNFORECASTED TURB.

Narrative

SEP/WED/01; I DEPARTED LXT; LEE SUMMIT ARPT XA30 FOR A PLEASURE FLT. I FLEW TO 3GV GRAIN VALLEY ARPT; PICKED UP MY DAUGHTER AND GRANDDAUGHTER FOR THE PURPOSE OF TAKING THEM TO LAMBERT; ST LOUIS TO CONNECT WITH THE AIRLINER HOME. I HAD ALREADY TALKED TO FSS THAT DAY AND WX WAS NO PROB FOR A VFR FLT. AFTER DEPARTING 3GV I CONTACTED WHITEMAN APCH FOR FLT FOLLOWING. THE FLT WENT WELL AND WE ARRIVED IN ST LOUIS AT APPROX XC10. I LET MY PAX OUT AND STARTED MY ENG AT APPROX XC30; UPON WHICH TIME I CONTACTED CLRNC DELIVERY FOR FLT FOLLOWING BACK TO LXT. CLRNC GAVE ME A SQUAWK CODE AND CLRNC FREQ AND TOLD ME TO GO TO GND CTL AND WAIT FOR THEM TO CALL ME BEFORE TAXIING AND TO HOLD ON THE RAMP UNTIL I WAS CONTACTED. APPROX XC35 I WAS TOLD TO TAXI TO RWY 12R AND CONTACT THE TWR WHEN I WAS READY FOR DEP. I DID MY RUN-UP AND CONTACTED THE TWR AND APPROX XC40 WAS TOLD I WAS #10-12 IN LINE FOR DEP; AT WHICH TIME I ACKNOWLEDGED. AT APPROX XD10 AFTER 15-25 TKOFS AND LNDGS I WAS TOLD TO TAXI IN POS FOR TKOF RWY 12R. I WAS THEN; TO THE BEST OF MY UNDERSTANDING; CLRED FOR TKOF AND FLY RWY HEADING RWY 12. SHORTLY AFTER CLBING OUT; I ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TO SEVERE TURB FROM OTHER DEPARTING ACFT. I MAINTAINED CTL TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY AND AT NO TIME FELT I WAS IN ANY EXTREME DANGER; BUT WAS STILL VERY CONCERNED FOR OUR SAFETY. SOON AFTER I WAS TOLD BY TWR TO CONTACT DEP AT WHICH TIME I DID SO. SHORTLY AFTER; WITHIN A FEW SECONDS; I OBSERVED AN AIRLINER TO THE R AND IN FRONT OF OUR ACFT; BUT NOT WHAT I WOULD HAVE CONSIDERED A CLOSE ENCOUNTER FROM MY POINT OF VIEW. I OVERHEARD THE AIRLINER SAY SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A SMALL ACFT AT WHICH TIME DEP ASKED ME WHAT MY HEADING WAS AND I TOLD HIM 120 DEGS. HE ASKED IF THAT WAS WHAT I WAS TOLD TO DO. I ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WAS WHAT I UNDERSTOOD. HE THEN GAVE ME A HEADING OF 170 DEGS. I LATER OVERHEARD THE AIRLINER PLT SAY HE DIDN'T EVEN BELIEVE I HAD A PROPER CLRNC. THIS WAS NOT MY FIRST TIME INTO CLASS B AND IN FACT I WAS IN LAMBERT THE PREVIOUS WEEK WITH NO PROBS. IF WHAT I UNDERSTOOD FOR MY HEADING WAS INCORRECT; IT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL IF THE TWR WOULD HAVE ADVISED ME AGAIN TO TAKE UP A HEADING OF 170 DEGS BEFORE TELLING ME TO CONTACT DEP; OR CLRING THE JET BEHIND ME FOR TKOF. UNTIL I OVERHEARD THE CTLR AND AIRLINER TALKING; I WAS UNAWARE THERE WAS A PROB.
