A SMA PLT UNABLE TO CONTACT AAA APCH CONTROL FOR HIS CLRNC; DECIDED TO TAKE OFF VFR THEN TRY TO CONTACT THEM WHILE AIRBORNE.
Narrative
THIS OCCURRED DURING THE TIME AFTER TRADE CENTER INCIDENT WHEN VFR FLT WAS NOT PERMITTED; BUT IFR WAS. I MADE AN IFR TRIP FROM XXX TO ZZZ ABOUT 1/2 HOUR FLT. WHEN I GOT READY TO RETURN I FILED WITH FSS AT YYY; US. ZZZ IS A NON TOWER AUXILIARY ARPT FOR AAA. I CALLED APCH CONTROL ON 128.5 TO GET MY CLRNC ON THE GND. I COULD NOT MAKE CONTACT; WHICH IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR ME WITH MY EQUIPMENT. I USUALLY GET AIRBORNE UNDER VFR CONDITIONS FIRST AND GET APCH RIGHT AFTER TAKEOFF. BECAUSE OF THE NO VFR RULE I WASN'T SURE WHAT TO DO. SINCE I HAD FILED IFR AND INTENDED TO FLY UNDER THOSE RULES I WOULD TAKE OFF AND CONTACT APCH ON 128.5 THE FREQ THAT WAS ON MY PLATES. AS I BEGAN MY TKOF ROLL SOMEBODY CALLED ON THE RADIO TELLING ME TO SWITCH FREQ TO 126.1; WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY AND WAS ABLE TO GET THE CTRL WHO GAVE ME MY CLRNC AND SQUAWK WHILE I WAS ROLLING. I DID LIFT OFF BEFORE GETTING THE ENTIRE SQUAWK ENTERED AND TOLD THE CTLR I WAS AIRBORNE AND SQUAWKING THE CODE. THE CTLR STATED THAT VFR FLT WAS NOT PERMITTED. SINCE I DID RECEIVE THE CLRNC WHILE STILL ON THE RWY I DIDN'T FEEL THAT I WAS FLYING VFR. WHEN I HAD CALLED THE FBO THAT MORNING ASKING ABOUT A CAR THE INDIVIDUAL TOLD ME I COULD REACH AAA ON THE GND 128.5. I COULD HAVE CHECKED FURTHER AT THE FBO BEFORE LEAVING. THIS IS A CONFUSING TIME TO BE FLYING.
