Synopsis

EXITING RWY; GA PLT PERCEIVES CONFLICT WITH AN ACR TAXIING TOWARDS HIM; CROSSES IN FRONT WITHOUT COM WITH GND CTL.

Narrative

IT WAS EXTREMELY DARK WITH NO MOON AT ALL. I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 14. AT THIS ARPT; TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ARE NORMALLY ISSUED DURING ROLLOUT. THIS TIME THE TWR ISSUED NO TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WHILE I WAS ON THE RWY. AFTER ROLLING OUT; I TURNED R OFF OF RWY 14 ONTO TXWY B. WHILE CLRING THE RWY; I PROCEEDED TO DIAL IN THE TWR GND FREQ AND STOP TO AWAIT TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. I NORMALLY KEEP THE GND FREQ IN MY SECOND RADIO; BUT LATELY HAVE BEEN KEEPING 121.5 UP ON MY SECOND RADIO AS REQUIRED BY NOTAM. CONSEQUENTLY; I WAS BRIEFLY DISTRACTED BY THE NEED TO DIAL THE GND FREQ INTO MY #1 RADIO. SUDDENLY; I NOTICED AN EXTREMELY BRIGHT LIGHT COMING DIRECTLY AT ME FROM THE L ON TXWY A. IT APPEARED TO BE A COMMERCIAL AIRLINER; AND IT WAS NOT CLR TO ME THAT THE AIRLINER'S R WING WOULD MISS ME IF I STOPPED AT MY CURRENT LOCATION. JUDGING THAT I HAD SUFFICIENT TIME; I QUICKLY ADVANCED THE THROTTLE AND CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD ON TXWY B AND ACROSS TXWY A. THE TWR IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED ME AND TOOK ME TO TASK FOR PROCEEDING ON THE TXWYS WITHOUT A CLRNC. I MIGHT ADD THAT TXWY A IS NOT PARALLEL TO THE RWY JUST S OF TXWY B AND THIS EXACERBATED THE PROB BY MAKING IT APPEAR THAT THE AIRLINER WAS COMING STRAIGHT AT ME. A COUPLE OF THINGS COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS NEAR CLOSE ENCOUNTER. FIRST; I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY; JUST AFTER EXITING THE RWY; AND THEN DIALED IN THE GND FREQ AND CONTACTED GND CTL. SECOND; THE TWR SHOULD HAVE PROBABLY TOLD ME TO EXIT THE RWY AT A3 BEHIND THE AIRLINER THAT WAS TAXIING ON TXWY A TO RWY 14.
