Synopsis

A C172 PLT RAN OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY DURING LNDG.

Narrative

ARRIVED AT ARPT AT XA30. COMPLETED THE PREFLT AT XA45. WINDS AVG BETWEEN 8-10 KTS. THEY WERE OCCASIONALLY GUSTING AT 13-15 KTS. I WAITED FOR THE WINDS TO CALM DOWN. I ENDED UP WAITING ABOUT AN HOUR. I TAXIED AND TOOK OFF WHEN THE WINDS WERE AT 7 KTS. ONCE AIRBORNE THE WINDS WERE VERY BAD. DURING THE DURATION OF MY 1.2 HR FLT I TRIED TO LAND 3 TIMES; BUT THE WINDS WERE TOO BAD. I CONTINUED TO LISTEN TO THE WX ON THE COM; AND BEFORE MY 4TH ATTEMPTED LNDG; THE WINDS WERE AT 8 KTS. THE WINDS WERE STILL AT 8 KTS WHEN I WAS ON FINAL. THE WIND WAS NOT A DIRECT CROSSWIND; BUT CLOSE. I MADE THE LANDING WITH A SLIGHT HOP ON THE RWY. I USED MY BRAKES TO START SLOWING DOWN. I HAD A GND ROLL SPEED OF 50 KTS. WHEN I GOT SLAMMED BY A VICIOUS DIRECT CROSSWIND I COUNTERED BY PUTTING THE AILERONS IN THE CORRECT POS; LEFT IN THIS CASE. THE WIND WAS VERY STRONG. IT STARTED TO PUSH ME TO THE RIGHT OF THE RWY. I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES; AND THEY LOCKED UP. THE WIND PUSHED ME OFF THE RWY INTO THE INFIELD. MY BRAKES WERE STILL LOCKED UP ON THE GRASS; WHICH MADE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CTL. MY RIGHT LNDG GEAR HIT A GND RWY LIGHT. I ENDED UP ON THE ASPHALT AT THE MIDFIELD TXWY. NOBODY WAS HURT. THE DAMAGE CAUSED THE FAIRING COVERING THE TIRE TO BREAK. WHEN I WENT INSIDE MY FLT INSTRUCTOR WAS THERE. HE LOOKED AT MY LOGBOOK AND TOLD ME MY 90 DAY SOLO TIME WAS EXPIRED. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT I COULD NOT FLY IN WINDS ABOVE 8 OR 9 KTS. I HAD NO IDEA THAT I WAS OVER THE 90 DAYS. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT THE 90 DAYS; NOR THE WINDS. I JUST THOUGHT ON A WINDY DAY IT WAS UP TO THE PLT'S DISCRETION. IT SURPRISED ME.
