Synopsis

A MEDIUM LARGE TRANSPORT ON TKOF ROLL BEGAN TO VEER TO THE R AT 90 KNOTS. TKOF WAS REJECTED. RPTR SUSPECTED BRAKE MALFUNCTION.

Narrative

FLT ABC WAS CLRED POSITION AND HOLD RWY 23 TO WAIT FOR TFC DOWN FIELD TO CLR. WITH THE TKOF CLRNC AND INITIAL THRUST ADDITION; THE ACFT BEGAN TO VEER TO THE R. WHEN FULL L RUDDER AT 80 TO 90 KNOTS WOULD NOT CORRECT THE ACFT TRAVEL BACK TO THE CTRLINE; I CALLED FOR AND PERFORMED AN ABORT. JUST AFTER CLRING THE RWY AT K2; THE L BRAKE TEMP INDICATORS WERE INDICATING 6 ON THE OUTBOARD AND 7 ON THE INBOARD. DURING THE TAXI TO THE GATE BOTH INDICATORS INCREASED TO 8 UNITS; AND AFTER THE ENGINES WERE SHUT DOWN CONTINUED TO RISE TO 9 UNITS. I RECEIVED EVERY INDICATION THAT THE NOSEWHEEL STEERING WAS CTRED ON THE INITIAL TKOF ROLL; AND AM THEREFORE CONCERNED AS TO THE REASON FOR THE PLANE TO VEER TO THE R; WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A L BRAKE ASSEMBLY PROB AS THAT WOULD DICTATE A L TURNING TENDENCY. MAINT IS REPLACING THE L BRAKE ASSEMBLY FOR THE HIGH BRAKE TEMP; HOWEVER AT THIS TIME THE REASON FOR THE CONTROLLABILITY PROB HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED. THE PAX WERE INITIALLY HELD ON BOARD FOR SAFETY AND UNTIL VERIFICATION THAT THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY WOULD COOL PROPERLY. LATER THE FLT WAS CANCELLED.
