Narrative
THIS WAS A RELATIVELY SHORT FLT FROM BLM TO TEB -- 26 MINS. THE NAV RADIOS ON THE AIRPLANE HAD RECENTLY BEEN REPLACED. THE L DME BECAME INOP; AND THE R DME BECAME INTERMITTENTLY INOP DURING THE FLT. ATIS INDICATED A VOR/DME ARC APCH TO RWY 24. I REQUESTED AN ILS TO RWY 19. APCH SAID THEY 'WOULD LET US KNOW.' AS WE APCHED TEB; I FELT AS THOUGH WE WOULD BE ASSIGNED RWY 19. ALL OF A SUDDEN; THE CTLR CLRED US TO AN INTXN I HAD NEVER HEARD OF. I LATER LEARNED THAT IT WAS ON THE APCH PLATE; BUT NOT IN OUR FMS DATABASE AS PART OF THE APCH. I HAVE BEEN TO LGA; JFK AND EWR MANY TIMES; BUT NOT TO TEB. I HANDED THE APCH PLATE TO THE OTHER PLT; AND TOLD HIM TO 'TALK ME THROUGH IT.' HE WAS; REGRETTABLY; LOOKING AT THE BACK SIDE OF THE PLATE WHICH DEPICTED ANOTHER APCH. HE SAID TO TURN IMMEDIATELY L; WHILE WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN A R ARC TURN. IT WAS NOT PRETTY. THE PROB WAS DUE IN PART TO MISUNDERSTANDING AND TOO LITTLE TIME TO FAMILIARIZE ONESELF WITH THE APCH PLATE. COMPOUNDED WAS THE FACT THAT NEITHER OF US WAS FAMILIAR WITH TEB. I TRIED TO 'HEAD IT OFF' WITH AN ILS TO RWY 19; AND WAS NOT APPRISED OF THE RWY/APCH UNTIL I WAS LITERALLY ON TOP OF IT.
