Narrative
LANDED SAN RWY 27 LOC AT XA35 LCL L TURN OFF REQUIRED. TAXI BACK ON TXWY B TO APCH END HOLD SHORT FOR LNDG TFC. AFTER 2 LNDGS; WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CROSS RWY 27 TO PARKING AND EXPEDITE DUE TO LNDG TFC 3 MI FINAL. PITCH DARK WITH NO LIGHTING FOUND US XING STRAIGHT AHEAD TO AN APRON ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY. THIS APRON HAD NO APPARENT EXIT. WE HAD TO ASK FOR ARPT GND ASSISTANCE TO EXIT APRON ONTO APPROVED TXWY. NO DAMAGE TO AIRPLANE; NO DAMAGE TO ARPT. AREA IS VERY CONFUSING AT NIGHT WITH OLD RWY DESIGNATED AS TXWY D LIGHTING IS POOR AND CONFUSING WITH POOR DIAGRAM. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATED THAT AFTER WAITING APPROX 5 MINS AT TXWY D FOR LNDG TFC HE WAS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 27; WITH AN 'EXPEDITE' FOR LNDG TFC. INSTEAD OF MAKING THE HALF L TURN REQUIRED TO STAY ON TXWY D HE PROCEEDED STRAIGHT AHEAD ENDING UP IN THE 'OVAL AREA.' THIS OVAL AREA IS PAVED; HOWEVER; IT'S NOT CONSIDERED AN AREA FOR TAXIING. THE RPTR REVEALED; ALTHOUGH HE WAS CLR OF RWY 27; THE TWR HAD LNDG TFC GO AROUND. BECAUSE HE COULD NOT SEE AN EXIT TO HIS LOCATION; BLUE TXWY LIGHTS AHEAD AND RWY TO THE REAR; HE REQUESTED A MARSHALLER FOR ASSISTANCE. THE FINAL SOLUTION WAS TO MAKE A HARD R TURN WITH A L TURN BTWN THE TXWY LIGHTS ONTO TXWY C. NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO ACFT OR SURFACE AREA.
