Synopsis

A B737-300 WAS OPERATED BY 15 CREWS FOR 6 DAYS IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH AN OPEN LOG ITEM ON #2 NAV RECEIVER INTERMITTENT WITH ACFT REMAINING IN AUTOLAND STATUS.

Narrative

WE PICKED UP THE ACFT IN ZZZ. I CHKED THE LOGBOOK BACK TO THE LAST SVC CHK. AN 'A' CHK WAS SIGNED OFF ON DEC/SAT/01; AT XA30 IN ZZZ1; AND SEVERAL PM CHKS SINCE. ALSO ON THE SVC CHK PAGE WAS A WRITE-UP BY A FLC ON DEC/FRI/01 WITH NO FLTS ON THAT PAGE. THE WRITE-UP WAS #2 NAV RADIO IS INTERMITTENT; AUX; NAV OK. THE SIGN OFF ON THE SAME PAGE DATED ON DEC/SAT/01 SAID 'CALLED BOTH TWR AND GND AND OPS USING OPS(?) OPS CHKED NORMALLY OK TO CONTINUE.' THE WRITE-UP WAS FOR A NAV RADIO AND THE SIGN OFF WAS FOR A COM RADIO. I DIDN'T THINK TOO MUCH ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THE SVC CHK SIGN OFF. ENRTE TO ZZZ2 I READ THE WRITE-UP AGAIN AND RESEARCHED THE LOGBOOK MORE. THE #2 NAV SHOULD HAVE DOWN GRADED THE ACFT TO CAT IA FROM CAT IIIA. IT WAS NEVER RECTIFIED. 15 CREWS HAD FLOWN THE ACFT UP TO US. I CALLED MAINT CTL IN ZZZ3 AND DISCUSSED THE LOGBOOK. THE CTLR AGREED THERE WAS A PROB AND AT FIRST WANTED CONTRACT MAINT TO CHK THE #2 NAV AND CLR THE ITEM. HE ALSO SAID IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED; CLRED IN ZZZ4 THIS MORNING; DEC/SAT/01. A PLT ALSO QUESTIONED IT AND MAINT IN ZZZ4 WAS TO TEST NAV AND CLR THE ITEM AND RECTIFIED THE ACFT TO CAT III STATUS. ZZZ4 MAINT ONLY WROTE THAT THEY DID MAINT TRAINING ON HUD (HEADS UP DISPLAY) AND ACFT WAS RETURNED TO CAT IIIA STATUS. WHEN I READ THIS TO DUTY CTL (MAINT) IN ZZZ3 THE CTLR SAID SEVERAL WORDS AND THEN HEADS WOULD ROLL. AS PER DUTY CTL I REWROTE THE #2 NAV AND RETURNED THE ITEM BACK TO THE ORIGINAL LOG PAGE; AND DOWN GRADED IT TO CAT IA STATUS.
