Narrative
DURING PREFLT ACTIVITIES; RAMP AGENT CAME TO FLT DECK WITH HAZMAT PAPERWORK FOR SCHEDULED HAZMAT FOR THIS FLT AS PER THE COMPANY POLICY. WHILE REVIEWING PAPERWORK; THE FACT THAT HAZMAT WAS DESCRIBED AS 'OXYGEN-COMPRESSED;' WITH A CLASS OF 5.1 OXIDIZERS -- THE VALUE JET ACCIDENT CAME RIGHT TO MIND. I CALLED UP OUR COMPANY'S CARGO SVC CTR AS PER OUR OPS MANUAL AND TALKED TO A CARGO REPRESENTATIVE. I HAD A FEW CONCERNS: 1) CARRYING OXYGEN AND THE DRILL CODE DID NOT MATCH FOR THE UN1072 NUMBER. MY PAPERWORK SHOWED CODE 2L (LOW RISK) VERSUS 2X (OXIDIZER). INCORRECT PAPERWORK. THE AGENT SAID IT WAS OK TO CARRY THE MATERIAL; BUT IF THE PAPERWORK WASN'T CORRECT TO REFUSE THE SHIPMENT. IT SEEMS THAT HE DID NOT HAVE THE SAME INFO AS I DID WITH REGARD TO A PLT BULLETIN DATED NOV/FRI/01 756-01-09 'DANGEROUS GOODS AND HAZARDOUS CARGO;' THAT SAYS WE CANNOT CARRY CLASS 5 ITEMS AT ALL. HAZMAT WAS REFUSED FOR SHIPMENT AND SENT BACK TO CARGO BUILDING. CAPT'S IRREGULARITY RPT FILED AND UNION SAFETY DEPT NOTIFIED. JUST A REMINDER FOR EVERYONE TO REALLY CHK THE PAPERWORK AND THE HAZMAT.
