A MOONEY M20K PVT PLT LANDS HIS STEED GEAR UP ON HIS SECOND APCH TO GMU; SC.

Narrative

ON A FLT FROM GYH TO GMU; I FAILED TO EXTEND THE LNDG GEAR. THE FLT WAS A SHORT (2 MIN) VFR FLT. PRIOR TO MY ARR AT THE ARPT; I DID MY FLT PLANNING AND RECEIVED A DUATS WX BRIEFING. THE WX WAS CLR; HOWEVER; THE WINDS WERE GUSTING TO 22 KTS. A FULL PREFLT WAS DONE PRIOR TO DEP. I TOOK OFF ON RWY 23 AT GYH AND ONCE CLR OF THE ARPT AREA; CONTACTED GMU TWR. THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO ENTER A L BASE TO RWY 28; AND THEN CLRED ME TO LAND. DURING THE LNDG FLARE; A GUST OF WIND LIFTED THE AIRPLANE; SO I ELECTED TO GO AROUND. ACCORDINGLY; I NOTIFIED THE TWR. ON CLBOUT; I RAISED THE GEAR AND CLEANED UP THE ACFT. ON THE NEXT APCH I WAS BEGINNING MY LNDG CHKLIST WHEN THE TWR CALLED OUT TFC FOR ME TO FOLLOW AND CLRED ME TO LAND. I HAD SET THE FLAPS; BUT HAD NEGLECTED TO EXTEND THE LNDG GEAR. THE ACFT LANDED ON ITS BELLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RWY. I NOTIFIED THE TWR; TURNED ALL ELECTRICAL SWITCHES OFF; MOVED THE FUEL SELECTOR TO THE OFF POS AND EXITED THE ACFT. THE DAMAGE TO THE ACFT WAS NOT SUBSTANTIAL. REFLECTING BACK ON THE CHAIN OF EVENTS; I REALIZE THAT I ALLOWED THE DISTRS OF THE GO AROUND AND THE TFC RPT TO INTERRUPT THE DUTIES I NEEDED TO PERFORM. IN THE FUTURE; I'M GOING TO MAKE SURE THAT DISTRS DON'T INTERFERE WITH MY FLYING THE ACFT BY INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF 'DUAL' INSTRUCTION THAT I RECEIVE. MY INGRAINING PROCS INTO MY ROUTINE; THEY WILL BECOME MORE AUTOMATIC WHEN DISTRS ARE PRESENT.
