Synopsis

C172 PLT HAD RWY INCURSION AT LNS.

Narrative

BACKGND: NEWLY LICENSED PLT. THIS FLT BEGAN WITH ONLY 10.7 HRS LOGGED SINCE PVT PLT CHK RIDE; AND LESS THAN 4 HRS TOTAL TIME (ALL WITH INSTRUCTOR) IN C172. TRAINED AT NON TWRED FIELD AND HAD ONLY MINIMUM REQUIRED FIELD EXPERIENCE. EVENTS: RENTED A C172 FOR PRACTICE FLT TO LNS INTENDING TO GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE C172; IMPROVE SKILLS IN CTLED FIELD ENVIRONMENT; AND LEARN TO USE ADDITIONAL NAV EQUIP (LORAN). INFLT; I USED LORAN TO TRACK COURSE PAST RDG ENRTE TO LNS; AND UTILIZED THE DUAL RADIOS TO OBTAIN FLT-FOLLOWING FROM RDG AND ATIS RPT FROM LNS. AFTER LNDG ON RWY 26 (WITH LAHSO FOR RWY 31); I TAXIED ONTO TXWY H AND HELD AT TXWY D TO CONTACT LNS GND. RADIO CONTACT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL WITH COM #1; AND AFTER 3 ATTEMPTS (RECEIVER WAS SILENT); SWITCHED COM #2; WHICH WAS ACTIVE; AND CONTACT WAS ESTABLISHED. I WAS DIRECTED TO TURN R ONTO TXWY D AND HOLD AT RWY 31. THIS IS WHERE I ALLOWED MYSELF TO BECOME SO DISTR BY THE FAILURE OF COM #1 (AND RESETTING THE RADIO TO TRY TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM THE RECEIVER) THAT I FAILED TO PAY ATTN TO WHERE I WAS ON THE TXWY. I CROSSED THE HOLD LINE AT RWY 31; THE GND CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO 'STOP NOW;' AND I BROUGHT THE AIRPLANE TO A STOP 1/2 WAY BTWN THE HOLD LINE AND THE RWY. CONCLUSIONS: I TOOK ON TOO MANY CHALLENGES AT ONCE DURING THAT FLT. THE LARGER; HEAVIER AIRPLANE; THE DUAL RADIO STACK; LEARNING TO USE LORAN; AND ENTERING THE UNFAMILIAR CTLED ENVIRONMENT LEFT LITTLE ROOM FOR ALSO DEALING WITH AN UNEXPECTED MALFUNCTION. THIS PLACED ME IN A POS WHERE THE LIKELIHOOD OF A POOR DECISION WAS INCREASED. CORRECTIVE ACTION: I WILL IMPROVE MY SKILLS IN SMALLER; MANAGEABLE INCREMENTS. I NOW KNOW THAT I SHOULD GAIN FAMILIARITY WITH THE EQUIP IN A MORE FAMILIAR ENVIRONMENT BEFORE EXPANDING THE CHALLENGE TO INCLUDE MORE COMPLEX AIRSPACE.
