A C182 CFI ENTERS THE R3602B SECTOR OF FORT RILEY WHEN MAKING A VISUAL APCH; R DOWNWIND TO MHK; KS.
Narrative
I WAS ON A VISUAL DSCNT INTO MHK FROM THE SW. I NOTED RESTR AIRSPACE TO THE W OF THE ARPT ON THE ENRTE CHART; BUT DID NOT FEEL IT WOULD CONFLICT WITH MY VISUAL APCH INTO THE ARPT. APPROX 2-3 MI SW OF THE ARPT; I RPTED THAT I WAS ON A R DOWNWIND FOR RWY 21. I WAS LESS THAN 1 MI W OF THE EXTENDED CTRLINE; TRACKING PARALLEL TO THE RWY. AT THIS TIME; TWR INFORMED ME I WAS IN RESTR AIRSPACE AND SHOULD TURN R IMMEDIATELY. I COMPLIED WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS AND CONTINUED WITH L TFC TO LNDG. ONCE ON THE GND; I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW A SECTIONAL OF THE AREA (AN AREA I AM NOT FAMILIAR WITH). THE CLASS D AIRSPACE SURROUNDING THE ARPT IS SEVERELY LIMITED TO THE W BY THE RESTR AIRSPACE. THIS WAS NOT AS APPARENT ON THE ENRTE CHART. HAD I HAD A SECTIONAL FOR REVIEW PRIOR TO THE APCH; I WOULD HAVE ACCOMPLISHED MY VISUAL APCH FROM THE SW AROUND TO THE SE. A PROPER AND THOROUGH REVIEW OF THE SURROUNDING AIRSPACE AND LANDMARKS PRIOR TO THE APCH WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS INCURSION. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO THIS INCURSION INCLUDE: SEVERE CLR; RESULTING IN A LAX BRIEFING OF THE APCH AND SURROUNDING AIRSPACE; RELIANCE ON DATA THAT WAS NOT THE BEST SOURCE OF INFO; LESS THAN FULL EXAMINATION OF THE INFO THAT WAS AVAILABLE; RUNNING BEHIND SCHEDULE AND IN A HURRY. ALTHOUGH PROPER INSPECTION OF AVAILABLE INFO WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS INCURSION; A REMINDER BY ATC AT THE INITIATION OF THE VISUAL WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL; GIVEN THE EXTREME CLOSENESS OF THE RESTR AREA TO THE ARPT.
