Synopsis

A B762 CABIN CREW; ENRTE FROM ORD TO LAX WERE CONFRONTED BY 2 PAX WHO INSISTED ON VIOLATING THE NO SMOKING RULE.

Narrative

PAX X ENTERED THE A-6 LAVATORY (AFT LAVATORIES) AND WAS IN THE LAVATORY FOR WHAT APPEARED TO BE AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME. ALSO HIS TRAVELING COMPANION WAS IN THE A-5 LAVATORY FOR WHAT APPEARED TO BE AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME. DURING THEIR TENURE IN THE LAVATORIES; IT WAS AUDIBLE THAT COMPARTMENTS WITHIN THE LAVATORY WERE BEING OPENED AND CLOSED. I MADE A PA ASKING THE PAX TO RETURN TO THEIR SEATS (GENERAL PA) DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE SEATBELT SIGN WAS ON AND IT WAS A FEDERAL REG TO COMPLY WITH CREW MEMBER INSTRUCTIONS AS WELL AS INSTRUCTIONAL SIGNS. PAX X; COMPLIED IMMEDIATELY WITH THE PA. HIS TRAVELING COMPANION EVENTUALLY COMPLIED; MINS LATER. FLT ATTENDANT #3 THEN ENTERED THE A-6 LAVATORY AT WHICH TIME HE SMELLED CIGARETTE SMOKE. HE TOLD ME AND I APCHED THE PAX X. PAX X NEITHER ADMITTED OR DENIED THAT HE HAD BEEN SMOKING. I ASKED WHERE HE PUT THE CIGARETTE BUTT. HE INDICATED THE TOILET. I TOLD HIM IT WAS A FEDERAL OFFENSE TO SMOKE IN THE LAVATORY. IT WOULD RENDER SOME TYPE OF CORRECTIVE ACTION. I WENT TO FIRST CLASS TO RETRIEVE THE FAA SMOKING FORM; NOTIFY THE PURSER AND CAPT. FLT ATTENDANT #4 WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN PAX X'S DRIVER'S LICENSE. SHE WAS UNSUCCESSFUL WITH HIS TRAVELING COMPANION. I DUG THROUGH THE A-6 AND A-5 TRASH CONTAINERS AND FOUND PAX X'S CIGARETTE BUTT IN THE TRASH CAN. IT HAD NOT BEEN EXTINGUISHED WITH WATER; BUT RATHER DROPPED INTO THE TRASH CONTAINER. THE TOWELS SURROUNDING IT WERE DAMP. POSSIBLY PREVENTED A FIRE ONBOARD. FLT ATTENDANT #4 IDENTED THESE 2 MEN TO LAX SECURITY UPON ARR INTO LAX.
