A B737-300 CREW; TAXIING FOR TKOF AT MCI; TAXIED INTO POS ON THE WRONG RWY.
Narrative
WE WERE GIVEN TAXI INSTRUCTIONS BY MCI GND TO TAXI TO RWY 27 'DUE TO FLOW.' FO RAN THE TKOF DATA FOR RWY 27. WE DID A PRETKOF CHKLIST AND SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AND ADVISED THEM WE WERE READY FOR DEP. TWR TOLD US TO 'HOLD SHORT.' WE HELD SHORT. MCI TWR THEN TOLD US TO 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' WE READ BACK THE CLRNC AND TAXIED INTO POS ON RWY 9. AS I ALIGNED THE ACFT ON THE CTRLINE; I NOTED THE RMI ON A 090 DEG HDG; REALIZED MY MISTAKE AND EXITED THE RWY. I SPOKE WITH THE MCI ATC SUPVR ON GND FREQ. HE INFORMED US THAT THERE WAS NOT A CONFLICT AND TOLD US TO HAVE A GOOD DAY. WE GRATEFULLY THANKED HIM FOR HIS ASSISTANCE. I HAD IT IN MY MIND THAT WE WERE TAXIING TO RWY 27; WHEN WE WERE ACTUALLY TAXIING TO RWY 9. I USUALLY HAVE MY PAGE ON THE YOKE CLIP; BUT TODAY I DID NOT. I FEEL THAT I ALLOWED MYSELF TO FOCUS TOO MUCH ON THE TKOF DATA AND CHKLIST RATHER THAN STEPPING BACK TO ASSURE I WAS GOING TO THE CORRECT RWY. ALSO; I WILL BE DOUBLECHKING MY HDG AND RWY NUMBERS BEFORE I CROSS ANY HOLD SHORT LINE IN THE FUTURE. BY RWY NUMBERS; I MEAN THE ONES PAINTED ON THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 540084: THE POS AND HOLD CLRNC WAS READ BACK AND WE COMPLETED THE CHKLIST. UPON TAXIING INTO POS; THE CAPT SAID WE WERE ON RWY 9; AND MADE A 180 DEG TURN TO EXIT THE RWY. AS WE WERE TURNING AROUND; THE TWR CALLED TO TELL US WE WERE ON RWY 9 AND TO CLR THE RWY. HAVING COVERED BOTH MY HSI AND RMI INDICATIONS; I WAS NOT IN A VERY GOOD POS TO KNOW WHERE WE WERE GOING. HAVING THE PLATE IN FRONT OF ME; BUT NOT REALLY FOLLOWING ALONG DIDN'T HELP MUCH EITHER.
