Narrative
WIND WAS CALM (AWOS) AEG. CALM WIND RWY 22. SEVERAL PLANES HAD BEEN USING RWY 22 FOR APPROX 1 HR. I TAXIED TO RWY 22 AND STATED MY DEP INTENTIONS. NO ACFT IN PATTERN ON BASE OR FINAL. SEVERAL TAXIING BEHIND ME. I TOOK RWY 22 AND TOOK OFF WITH APPROPRIATE RADIO XMISSIONS. I CROSSED THE DEP END OF RWY 22 AT 400 FT AGL AND SAW A PLANE AT 11 O'CLOCK POS AT ABOUT 4 MI. APPEARED TO BE HEADING W. HEARD A XMISSION REGARDING 'R BASE FOR RWY 4.' RWY 4 IS A L PATTERN; SO I WAS NOT SURE WHAT WAS GOING ON. BUT I DECIDED NOT TO TURN R XWIND *RWY 22 IS R-HAND PATTERN; RWY 4 IS L-HAND PATTERN). I SAW THAT THE RELATIVE POS OF THE ACFT (NOW AT 12 O'CLOCK POS) WAS NOT CHANGING. I BEGAN A L TURN TO 180 DEGS. I HEARD '4 MI FINAL RWY 4' AND REALIZED THAT THE PLANE I WAS WATCHING WAS INDEED ON A FINAL TO RWY 4. WITH MY 180 DEG HDG THERE WAS NEVER ANY DANGER. WE PASSED AS THE BONANZA WAS ON FINAL ABEAM OF ONE ANOTHER WITH THE BONANZA SEVERAL HUNDRED FT LOWER AND; I GUESS; ABOUT 750-1000 FT W OF ME. I DON'T KNOW IF HE SAW ME. HAD I DEPARTED SEVERAL MINS LATER; OR HAD I NOT SEEN THE PLANE IN THE DISTANCE AND TURNED XWIND (WHICH BLINDS ME TO THE L BECAUSE THE RANGE IS LOW WING) THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH CLOSER CALL. BONANZA NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED ALTHOUGH AN ACFT IN POS FOR RWY 22 CALLED 'HOLDING FOR BONANZA ON RWY 4.' BONANZA DID NOT FLY THE PATTERN. BONANZA DID NOT USE ACTIVE RWY. I DID NOT HEAR ANY POS OR LNDG INTENTION CALL WHEN I WAS ANNOUNCING MY DEP INTENTION.
